As Ollie says, definitely the correct process and something
those familiar with mic’d up will have seen a lot.
Dale Johnson notes this is the first time an on field review has
been cancelled by an offside in the APP.

In the ground, I thought England had a reasonable game. Foul
threshold felt really low but he was consistent with that all
the way through. YC’s were all fine as well.
I could tell something wasn’t overly right when England went
over to the monitor because he wasn’t looking at the monitor
directly and was half turning away. Heard the announcement loud
and clear. Speakers were very loud!
Well played Liverpool. Too much quality and a couple of mistakes
from us meant the game was almost over in a flash.

Very consistent…..poor for both teams….still looks like a rabbit
in the headlights and if he had the whole weight of VAR on his
shoulders.

I was interested he described it as a “penalty shout” aside from
the language being say ‘non standard’ I wonder did it suggest he
felt it wasn’t a penalty? Or perhaps didn’t want to make a
ruling on the issue there having been an offside beforehand?
I think ‘potential penalty’ would have been better wording. But
perhaps I am old fashioned, I just think they can sound a little
too colloquial on the announcements.

Who is Dale Johnson?? Surely Hopton tells England to delay….he
checks challenge and informs him he is recommending an onfield
review subject to APP…checks APP so no need for England to go to
monitor and clearly is angry as he explains process to Hopton
and therefore unnecessary open mic! Hopton has made England look
very uncomfortable.

Thinking about it, that does seem about right with what we’ve
seen when it comes to the APP. But more I think about it, it
makes no sense. The reasoning that Johnson uses, is that it’s to
save time/speed up the check. If we’re being honest, if there’s
1 thing VAR Isn’t, is quick
But makes the onfield official look rather silly going to the
monitor, then basically saying ‘oh hang on, I didn’t need to
come here’. It just brings unwanted attention to the officials.

Johnson is a journalist who seems to almost specialise in VAR.
And to be fair to him, he tends to be fairly knowledgeable.
I do think Hopton has done the correct thing, it’s just a
strange process

His Twitter bio is a good summary “Lots of VAR, plus
regulations, coefficients and permutations”. I know he looks at
how many european places each country will get amongst other
things.
I don’t agree that this is a bad process, I think it’s pretty
logical - and the fact that we have had probably hundreds of
penalty/red card reviews and this is the first time it’s been
put to question shows that.
Thought it was a penalty live, but very forgiveable mistake by
England in my opinion, with defender knocking attacker into
ball, rather than defender playing ball directly.

According to Dale Johnson on X VAR's are told to check for
offsides after sending the referee to the monitor so Hopton
actually did the right thing...

Agree - on the Webb & Owen show you can often hear them saying
something like "We'll check the APP as you make your way to the
monitor".

It does make sense because 99 times out of 100 the referee's
trip to the monitor is not cancelled by something happening in
the APP. If the referee was waiting for the APP check to be
completed, then 99 VAR checks would be slower and one would be
quicker (or cancelled). Overall much time is saved.
