The referee in the Maidenhead United game ended the first half
30 seconds early. After the half time break, the referee
recommenced the game with a free kick, allowed for the 30
seconds and then they went on with the second half.

Not quite in the league of Eddie Hughes of Weston-super-Mare
who, in 1978, blew for time after only 40 minutes of the second
half of Palace v Fulham at Selhurst Park, after his watch
stopped and he took the time from the notoriously unreliable
stadium clock instead of checking with his linesmen. Many of us
were on our way back home before the teams came out to play the
final 5 minutes, and the score remained 1-0 to Fulham. Mr Hughes
left the list at the end of the season after a short stay but
gave good service in his local area for many years afterwards.

A similar incident happened at Hartlepool on opening day but
they recalled the teams to play the last 2 minutes and then had
the half time break on that occasion.
New stopwatches required it seems!

For 39 seconds presumably which includes any added, wouldn’t you
just be sole arbiter of time and forget it to avoid such a faff?
No one outside of Maidenhead would be talking about it and now
they are.

I recall mentoring a "new" referee some time ago.
He played only 40 minutes in the first half and then when I told
him he couldn't play 50 in the second half, told me I was an
idiot (expletives deleted), that the 'rules' were ridiculous (at
least 3 expletives deleted) and went home, leaving me to Referee
the second half in his stead.
Imagine my surprise, nay disbelief, when I turned up in Leeds to
Referee a Women's FA Cup tie to find that he'd relocated to
Yorkshire and was on my line
I'd love to say that he had turned into an adequate official
under someone else's tutelage but my Mother told me not to tell
lies

Wasn't there an EFL game a couple of seasons ago where the same
thing happened? Ref had blown about 90 seconds early, they had
the full 15 minutes h/t, played the remaining minute and a half,
then swapped straight round. My brain is telling me it was the
season before last in the EFL, but I've no idea who the teams
were...

There was this match at Leyton Orient when the first half injury
time was played out after half time.
