I can’t blame Pawson on his whole performance. Typical low-key
performance (again). I’m still of the belief that the 2nd Man
Utd goal should be disallowed but I’m an Ipswich fan so my views
are probably biased.
Correct yellow card on the penalty. And everything else pretty
much spot on.

"Immediate impact" isn't what the law says. It's "scores in the
opponent's goal immediately after the ball has touched their
hand/arm, even if accidental". The shot from Maguire was very
clearly going wide, meaning it's an own goal, and therefore the
player did not score in the opponent's goal. This can't be
anything other than a goal.

Ok, fair enough. But then, if Maguire done the same thing
leading up to the goal but there was a shot which would’ve been
on target and easily saved by the goalkeeper but there’s a
deflection which takes it in, then the goal should be
disallowed.
The situations aren’t really that different but we would have
totally different outcomes.

Fair enough, there it is, it’s written in stone and I can’t have
any complaints. All my questions have been answered. Goal
correctly given.
Whether that’s a fair rule in both situations, I’ll leave that
for debate.

True, but one goes down as an own goal, the other doesn't.
Unfair on the defender too, but the line has to be drawn
somewhere!

No chance of a red there unless outside the box, so yellow spot
on.
Usual Pawson performance this afternoon, and I’m sure he was
glad when full time arrived as he looked absolutely drenched!

Excellent work by the assistant on the penalty. Pawson seemed to
be running in completely the wrong direction, so cannot have
seen it from his position

Gary Neville explained it really well and was on top of it even
before VAR explained what had happened, a plus point of a pundit
who bothers to learn the laws. Did Maguire score? No, his shot
was going a mile wide, therefore the goal has to be allowed.

Just to avoid anyone wasting time searching for it in the LoTG,
or even the simplified rules, it isn't in there. That text is
from the Premier League and Pro-Ref guidance handbook.

But it makes complete sense as the law is clear that it is only
disallowed if the player accidentally handling scores, and
Maguire very clearly didn't score.
