I'm surprised no others have commented.
A game decided after 26 seconds does not sit well with me,
unless it was a stonewall penalty, which I'm not sure it was.
Yes it was 2-0 but Tottenham wouldn't have been chasing the game
and gave away that corner.
If a player heads the ball on to his own hand it isn't a penalty
(agreed with Mr Cakir's observations, funny enough in Tottenham
Hotspur's favour), but if a ball hits a chest and the brushes an
arm it is? I'm not sure I know the laws anymore and I've been
refereeing 23 years.
Interested to know others views. I'm a neutral, but sadly the
game will be remembered for that decision (right or wrong) and
I'm not sure that is good for the game

Thanks for responding. I'm interested by your "stonewall in
Europe" comment. What made you think it was stonewall please, as
per my initial indication I'm at a loss.
If this is the European interpretation, then it will be
interesting how this will be disemminated down from the FA.
I think people watch association football as it's easy to
understand. If we are moving to vaguarities then we may as all
watch rugby (at least the referee is respected there)

I thought it was a pretty clear handball and in line with other
offences we have seen punished - hand is certainly making the
body bigger.
I don't think the fact it was after 26 seconds is too relevant.
If the referee had been wrong in not awarding a penalty then
people would still be talking about it - and likely VAR would
have intervened anyway.

The hand is extended beyond a natural position and certainly
making the body bigger.
I think that we have seen less clear cut handballs given as
penalties in the Champions League this season so based on how it
has been judged I think a penalty was most likely outcome.

I think everyone agrees that the arm was extended beyond the
natural body position, but did it not hit the players chest?

It did but I'm not sure that precludes it being handball. The
wording of the new laws (which I know aren't officially applied
to the CL yet) suggests it is sometimes not a handball offence
in such circumstances but still seems to provide instances where
it is - page 16 of this

With the arm out like that, no surprise a penalty was awarded.
Not the most difficult game for Skomina and his team with few
fouls but thought he did well, keeping out of the spotlight.
The match itself was rather disappointing with both teams well
below their best. Given that Spurs had 5 or 6 shots on target
producing a couple of good saves by the Liverpool goalkeeper in
the last 20 minutes, I felt the BT commentators were a little
unfair on Spurs, suggesting they created no clear cut chances.
8 shots on target overall against Liverpool's 3 might indicate
otherwise. However, perhaps any Spurs fans on here might
explain why the 2 central defenders spent so much time passing
the ball sideways to each other and then back to Lloris for him
to hoof it upfield (they could have done that themselves). And
then if Lloris did roll the ball out to one of them, it set the
whole procedure in play again as the defenders were quickly
closed down. Sorry to go off topic but I found it infuriating
even as a neutral. Reminded me too much of United!

Considering that BT Sport has more than its fair share of
ex-Liverpool players, McManaman and Owen in this case, there
should be no surprise that their reporting was biased. At least
we were spared that half-wit Robbie Savage.

Not a difficult game for the officials and also not a very
enjoyable game for the neutral. however, this is the way that
modern football seems to be going with lots of passes across the
back four, sometimes taking over a dozen passes to get over the
halfway line but it does look good on the possession statistics.
As far as the penalty award is concerned, the referee was
correct in that his interpretation was exactly as has been seen
throughout most Champions League and Europa League matches this
season and I feel that this will continue and wil also be the
interpretaion in PL next season with the new directives.
The match had just 11 fouls which will probably please the
purist. This is the least amount since the 2013 final which had
19, in fact, the last 10 finals have average 30 per match and
the last 20, since the turn of the century have averaged 35.45
per match. I know that foul play is not to be condoned, however,
there was a lack of competitive edge in last night's game and it
was pretty dull fare.
From a personal point of view I do not like the messing about
with TLOG or the introduction of VAR, however, it seems to be
what the media and the modern fan wants so I am in a minority.
