There was an earlier quick throw in that Liverpool took which
nearly lead to a goal - the issue was the player took it from
about 15 yards further up the pitch (where one of the
replacement balls was sitting) from where the ball went out of
play and play wasn't pulled back.
Also any action to be taken on Alisson where MOTD shows him
destroying one of the subs boards by kicking it as he left the
pitch (he had already been given a YC during the match)? I
remember Wenger getting sent to the stands for kicking a water
       bottle once?

How on earth does a malfunctioning board constitute a lack of
professionalism? What utter nonsense from the Liverpool Manager.
       [/quote]
       Indeed.
In my view the lack of professionalism is not Robinson’s but
ProRef who have sent him out with substandard equipment, and
that’s before any malfunctions. As others have suggested, there
are far faster, easier and accurate ways to do this.

       Substitutions
Graham Scott is right. The boards are not great for multiple
substitutions with high squad numbers. There is a memory
function on the board to program up to 3 substitution displays
for one opportunity, but you do have to manually press / hold
down the + and - keys to get the numbers in first. The Premier
League have 3 subs boards at the ground to help speed up
multiple subs. Think using one board for three subs would be
better / quicker than programming them all separately.
  HTML https://referee-equipment.com/products/substitution-board?
In the EFL, the club is responsible for programming the board
(with memory function used for multiple subs) and handing over
the sub cards to the 4th official. The National League is pot
luck as to what board the club has, with inputting done by the
4th official. Some have one where you have the full 0-9 keypad
(best), some have the + & - keys with no memory (worst).
With the need to check numbers against names, check equipment,
keep track of substitution opportunities, program a board, write
everything down and then think about monitoring a 10 second
countdown, it’s not surprising what used to be a simple process
       takes so long.
       Penalty Award
I don’t think there is any doubt that Allison makes contact with
the attacker and in isolation is a foul. What I’m unsure on is
the application of the Premier League / Pro Ref guidance on
awarding penalties for these sorts of situations:
  HTML https://resources.premierleague.pulselive.com/premierleague/document/2026/08/19/84747a4b-b2bd-45a3-90ce-20ec2ef68b61/Premier-League-and-Pro-Ref-Competition-Guidance-Handbook-2026-27.pdf
Page 90: Contact after a pass or shot towards goal
       Considerations
       > Where there is contact following an attacker either passing
the ball or taking a shot at goal, where this contact is
inevitable or a consequence of momentum, play should typically
       be allowed to continue.
       > Where the contact is either clearly reckless (yellow card) or
serious foul play (red card) then a penalty kick and appropriate
       sanction is the expected outcome.
Allison was cautioned, but this was long after the challenge and
looks to have been for dissent rather than the foul for the
penalty. So if it wasn’t a reckless challenge by the goalkeeper,
should a penalty have been awarded?
       VAR on Foul Throw
Not clear whether it is a foul throw so fine with it not being
       given.
I don’t really understand why it is being said VAR cannot
intervene on a foul throw that leads to a penalty / goal. A lot
is being placed by those who carry that view on this line in the
       VAR Protocol:
The Laws of the Game do not allow restart decisions (corner
kicks, throw-ins etc.) to be changed once play has restarted, so
       they cannot be reviewed
The first line of that is critical. It is stating the principle
that once the game has restarted, the referee cannot change the
decision as to how the game should have been restarted (i.e. if
you give a throw-in to red and they take a throw-in, no matter
what you cannot go back and change the decision to give that
original throw-in to blue). That is the same as games without
       VAR.
This isn’t about reviewing “the restart” decision (i.e. which
way the throw should go), it’s about whether a team commits an
offence in taking that restart and in the APP. VAR would
presumably intervene if the attacker undertook an illegal feint
at a penalty kick? I also recall last season (I think it was)
where a Chelsea goal from a free kick was disallowed by VAR
where an attacker was less than 1m from the defensive wall.
Principle is the same - these are offences being committed in
the set up / at a restart.

Perhaps the money spent on the re-branding from PGMOL to ProRef
would have been better spent on replacing the current generation
of subs boards with a set that reflects the fact that (i) each
side can made five subs per game (so potentially ten in one go)
and (ii) squad numbers go from 1 to 99.
But then who would the clubs blame for their own poor play?

The irony is that the Premier League was sponsored by Copilot,
now Microsoft rather than Copilot specifically but the same
thing. It would be incredibly easy and cheap to build an iOS /
Android powered board where the 4th official just speaks to it
saying 47 off 23 on, 5 minutes added time, etc.

Still haven’t seen it, not that bothered that I haven’t.
Millions of games a season are played without a subs board. If
known to be not working, back to basics. Team shout who comes
off, officials can still tell each other, players still gave ten
seconds from when sub is checked as per no board rules, job
done. Did the board work later? If so I don’t believe in
coincidences…more to this than the club are letting on to save
       their own skin?

Don't think the board was broken, rather the 3 subs and high
numbers of team shirts too an age. 38 replaced 30, 73 replaced
       18, and 21 replaced 6, that's 186 presses of the + button, as
well as committing each change to memory. Even if you can
somehow press the + button 4 times a second, that's still the
best part of a minute just to program it, and that's assuming
nothing goes wrong. Plus whilst he was doing this he was
getting shouted at by Iraola and that hardly helps with
concentration. In the current technological age there has to be
a better way of doing this.

It really is shocking that you’d have to press the + button 73
times to get to that number.
I can’t believe that you can’t separate a number in the teens
column and the single digit column. And have + and - buttons so
when on 0, a press of - takes you to 9 and backwards from there.
That way the most number of presses you would need for one
number is 55 which would be 10 presses. I find it shocking that
there’s no such technology to do it like that.

It is still the clubs responsibility to do the boards, so I
would suggest the club either couldn’t use the boards or
inputted the numbers wrong! Maybe that’s what he’s sorting out
but I guess it’s easier to blame the officials though isn’t…

Turns out it isn't in the Premier League, the 4th official does
it. In the EFL, and European competitions, the teams do it but
not the EPL for some reason.
