A Good Start…

Dare we say it… a very good weekend for officials this weekend
with very little in the way of controversy with one match to go
tomorrow night.
The only thing close to a wrong decision was possible SFP by
Aina in Nottingham Forest vs Leeds (Robert Jones and VAR
Pawson). I think this could’ve very easy been serious foul play
and a red card since the player committed a scissor challenge
with some force, almost trapping the Leeds’ defender foot
between his legs which could’ve caused serious injury. Yellow
card was given on field and this was backed up.
But, as far as I’ve seen, the standard of officiating this
weekend has been very good and just the start that Webb would’ve
wanted. Good offerings on TV by Bramall, England and Oliver.
Hallam was excellent in Ipswich vs Sunderland and no other
controversies across any other game.
One of the first weekends with such little controversy I can
remember for quite a while so well done to all the officials
this weekend.

One of those where nobody would have complained had he given a
red. Just about got away with it . Enough doubt to go yellow

It is a marathon and not a sprint.

Two things are very clear to me. First, VAR have been told to
stay right out of it unless it really, really is a clear and
obvious error. Assuming they keep that it up can only be a good
thing, yes it will mean there are grumbles that a perceived
injustice is not corrected but that isn't what VAR was
introduced for.
Second is that referees have been told to be lenient on cards,
lots of challenges this weekend that would 100% have been
cautions last season have gone unpunished.
Also, whilst not Pro Ref directly related, the amount of added
time has dropped off dramatically from previous seasons, almost
all because of the lack of physio treatment required. Isn't it
amazing how the very same players that rolled around supposedly
injured after being touched now get straight back up? We all
often criticise law changes but the recent ones really have made
a massive improvement to the game.
