David Dickinson - Dundee United v Dundee (John Beaton VAR)

Firstly, I thought David Dickinson had a good game overall
today. He’s a referee whose performances seem to vary wildly
from week to week but I’ve seen him have excellent games in the
past (including a previous Dundee derby) so it was good to see
him have a good game again tonight.
The main talking point from on officiating perspective though
surrounds a supposed “mistaken identity” VAR intervention that
led to a United player having his yellow card overturned and the
Dundee player cautioned instead. In real time at the game I
thought Yoro (United) had caught Finnigan (Dundee) so wasn’t
shocked to see a free kick given.
Having watched this back though, I don’t feel VAR should be
getting involved here at all. I don’t think it’s a foul either
way, so I think the onfield decision should have stood.

This is an incorrect use of the mistaken identity protocol. It's
the same incorrect use that applied twice at the world cup and
has since been confirmed to be incorrect, so not sure why that
memo didn't make it to Scotland.

RefWatch suggests that the initial yellow card should not have
been awarded as the ball was won clearly but that the yellow
card issued after review was wrong as that too was not an
offence. A drop ball would have been a better outcome. However,
whether VAR should have got involved is another matter.....

First decision was a mistake (which at full pace was forgivable)
but seems like the VAR made up something to correct it. Nobody
wants VAR involved there. And the yellow card the Dundee player
picked up should be rescinded in my view for being wrongly
administered under VAR protocol.
