Besides this, it was the worst game of football (particularly
first half) I’ve ever seen.

Just to start the ball rolling…..in view of the time he spent
stood by the goalpost I think I would have cautioned him for
entering the pitch without my permission and awarded an indirect
free kick.

Why does he need your permission to re-enter the pitch? He
hadn't gone off for an injury, his natural momentum had taken
him off the pitch

than normal in my opinion.
Would you allow a player to nip off for a drink and return when
he chose to ?

If a player who requires the referee’s permission to re-enter
the field of play re-enters without the referee’s permission,
the referee must:
stop play (not immediately if the player does not interfere with
play or a match official or if the advantage can be applied)
caution the player for entering the field of play without
permission
If the referee stops play, it must be restarted:
with a direct free kick from the position of the interference
with an indirect free kick from the position of the ball when
play was stopped if there was no interference
A player who crosses a boundary line as part of a playing
movement does not commit an offence.
The last sentence there should give you the answer to your
question

Interesting one. Is the Crewe player offside?
"An attacking player may step or stay off the field of play not
to be involved in active play. If the player re-enters from the
goal line and becomes involved in play before the next stoppage
in play, or the defending team has played the ball towards the
halfway line and it is outside its penalty area, the player
shall be considered to be positioned on the goal line for the
purposes of offside. A player who deliberately leaves the field
of play and re-enters without the referee’s permission and is
not penalised for offside and gains an advantage, must be
cautioned."
Watched RefWatch this am and not convinced of the answer but it
is becoming a bit like overhearing a conservation on the No. 11
bus with everyone joining in.....

I think the one thing that is clear regarding this is that law
is not clear either way.
The player left the pitch as a natural part of his game playing
movement - no offence comitted.
There is no defined period of time for which, in this
circumstance, he needs to re-enter without needing permission
first, but it should be read between the lines of the laws that
this shouldn't be an unlimited period of time.
I think this is very much a 'spirit of the game situation' and
don't overly mind which way people fall in terms of the
argument. I think if I was the ref, I would allow the goalkeeper
to take the flack for his error rather than bail him out and
take the flack myself.
And yes, if my username didn't give it away, I'm a fan of the
'offended' team.

Well seeing as he wasn't in an offside position when the ball
was played by his teammate, it would be quite difficult for him
to have committed an offside offence.

I’m surprised at the amount of debate here, for me it’s a clear
goal, however the law doesn’t exactly specify this scenario.
Perhaps a new clause of ‘remains off the field of play’ would
clarify future situations?
