Nice to read a full report on an EFL game, and get a bigger
picture rather than just individual incidents. Thank you. Hope
this catches on. Perhaps we need a new thread “EFL
Patrol”. And maybe even a “Premier Patrol”?

There’s normally a few excellent reports from EFL Leagues One &
Two, normally posted in the appointments thread for the relevant
game week.

Crewe Alexandra FC (First Team) v Northampton Town FC (First
Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Sandoe, Lewis
Assistant Referee: Hallam, Aaron
Assistant Referee: Williams, Ollie
Fourth Official: Rogers, Darren
I thought Lewis was more than ok in Crewe’s opening home game of
the 26/27 season. Then again, it wasn’t the hardest game to ref.
I think a recently qualified ref could’ve done it! 2 bookings, 1
for our #9 which was weird. I do agree it was SPA however it
took an age for Lewis to produce the card. I think he was
consulting with the 4O (who was virtually right there) whether
it should be a yellow card. It got to the point where
Northampton had already started playing again before the yellow
was produced! I can’t remember the Northampton booking at all -
then again I was probably asleep it was that boring. 😂
Just before HT, 2 Northampton players clashed heads to which
Lewis stopped play immediately. The medics of both sides came on
to help. One lad was bleeding quite bad from the head, whilst
the other seemed fine. None of them had to stay off the pitch
for a min as this is an exception in the LOTG.
Then you have the Crewe goal - there is a general discussion
thread open for this.
Overall more than happy with Lewis and team in a dull affair.
I’m really intrigued to see who we get for our clash against
Port Vale at Saturday lunchtime!

Busy afternoon at Spotland and 8 yellows chucked in for good
measure…
9 if we included Crawley's manager.
Did he have a good game?
He was fine, didn’t affect the outcome anyway, although I’d be
interested to know why our goalkeeper was booked for being
impeded when attempting to clear the ball. The Crawley player
who did the impeding was shown a yellow card in the same
incident, so to the fans it was a bit of a mystery.
Mayber the goal-keeper did something unsporting in response to
being impeded?

I felt many of the cards were unnecessary and if a player went
to ground, you knew the whistle was coming. Not sure if it's
true to say he didn't affect the game, a very soft penalty
decision suggests otherwise.

Quite, hence why I said it was a bit of a mystery to the
watching public. That can be the only explanation.

It was a clear penalty, in the opinion of most observers,
including the players who didn't even raise a whimper in
protest.
It should never have got to that anyway; Gilmour tried to
dribble through three Crawley players when there was a simple
pass on to Brwon out wide.
