I agree - to a point. Referees are also fitter and more
professional in lifestyle than days of yore; so - perhaps - they
are better placed to cover breakaways. If moving closer to the
goal-line is not a realistic option, then a bit more width does
help with getting a better view.

But then if they go wide and there is a challenge on the right
hand side of the penalty they are too far away and too reliant
on their AR. Going wide has gone and won't be coming back, not
ever I suspect.

Running centrally seems to result in referees coming into
contact with the ball more frequently than they used to, and
also getting in the way of the players.
What is more frustrating is that they are not close enough to
tell whether a player has dived or been fouled when guarding the
ball out of play in what I think of now as the blind corner of
the pitch.

Whilst we are on the subject, there was a most interesting
article in yesterday's Sunday Times entitled 'How referees award
fouls: the science, art .... and guesswork'. Far too detailed to
even precis here, but the example of Meier famously disallowing
a crucial goal from Campbell at Euro 2004 for a foul against the
goalkeeper that he later admitted he had not actually seen. His
brain nonetheless registered 'it doesn't feel right', no VAR but
later viewing confirmed that Terry had barged into the goalie as
Campbell put the ball into the net. 'With experience, I learned
to trust that feeling'.

by Viking on August 27th, hardback £22.
Edit - sorry, now noted that this article and book have been
covered elsewhere under General Discussion. I shall look forward
to reading the book.

Due to the handball, The FA have suspended Aune Heggebo for two
matches for “deception of a match official”.

Not much of a deterrent. I'm sure most clubs would take that for
3 points. (And 1 of them is a Carabao cup tie when he would
probably have been rested anyway.)
I can't believe he had actually appealed against the decision.

That’s a bit harsh for me, I don’t see it as a premeditated
handball such as Maradona.

Incredible decision by the FA - sets a massive precedent for the
season - lets hope they maintain consistency when one of the
Arsenal or City players do the same and “deceive” the match
officials - easy to punish players from the lesser clubs…..

The offence isn't 'deception of a match official' it is
'successful deception of a match official'. That shouldn't
happen in the premier league because of VAR. I'm not really sure
West Brom can be considered a 'lesser club' among those in the
EFL.

But it's a massive minefield. Are we going to be banning players
whose appeals got a corner incorrectly awarded and a winning
goal scored?!
I'm not convinced it was a deliberate act to deceive, it was a
mistake, that's all, and I'm sure will even out across a season.
Not much consolation at the time but what can you do?!
I'd rather see unsuccessful attempted deception penalised with
additional measures such as the dive by Calafiore in the
Community Shield. If you showed most fans the two clips and
asked which player should receive a 2 match ban for their
offence, 95% would say the diver. But one gets a 2 match ban,
the other won't even have his yellow card counted to his season
total.
