T Robinson ( & Hugh Gilroy ? ) Norwich City v WBA

I'm sorry if you can't see the first "goal" then there is no
hope.
Unless Tim was expecting VAR to bail him out. Oh wait there is
no VAR so you have to make the correct decision for yourself.

Is there footage as the reporters on talkSPORT suggested that
both the referee and AR were blocked from seeing it by players'
bodies? Referees haven't yet been given the tool of x-ray
vision.

The AR is looking straight across, no bodies in the way, if he
can't see the arm out he's got a problem. I think it's too easy
for referees to say that they were blocked and whilst they can
be unlucky, at this level he's got to be getting in the right
position to see.

Which is I asked if there was any footage, I didn't say they had
got it right,

Just seen the sky highlights, looks like Robinson does have a
view

100% agree with you in terms of positioning and viewing angles -
referees are much much fitter than ever before, they have
fitness coaches, nutritionist etc etc yet still struggle with
getting into optimal viewing positions and use the excuse that
they were blocked off by a player as a throwaway excuse which
the majority on this board readily accept
That said, this is an incredibly difficult decision and i do
have sympathy for the referee ( and Norwich ) in this instance -
I would much rather a referee not make a decision if he is not
100% sure, rather than guess ( as what appeared to happen last
night at Wolves - still to see anything which confirms the
Referee was correct in awarding a penalty )

IMO, although it looks like the AR should 'see' it, it's
actually really difficult to decipher. Attacker's angle is away
from AR, so he can't fully see what's happened, the goalkeeper's
dived to intercept it, the attacker's knee has come up and is in
the mix. It's all a very 'flat' photoframe in the mind because
of how close it all happens together. And being 5 yards behind
play doesn't help with the viewing angle of the arm and contact
point.
The referee should've seen it too, and probably could've had a
better chance of seeing it, but for his positioning. A bit lazy,
but should've pushed wider and been 10 yards further out, closer
to the corner of the penalty area.
Wrong decision. Result impacting decision. 'Explainable', but
not quite palatable.

Of course it’s a blatant mistake. It only takes one replay to
see that but I can understand why.
I don’t think Robinson done too much wrong with his positioning
by following the play but he still could have given himself a
greater viewing angle into the box which may have helped
identify the offence. Don’t forget it’s not easy to see all
things from ground level and in that moment you’re probably
asking for a bit of help from the AR (who I do believe should
see the handball).

20 years ago a parks referee would have been marked down by an
assessor and advised to "run a better diagonal". Many of
today's top referees probably do not even know what a diagonal
is.
Many years ago, I used to a bit of referee training (in the old
days when it was volunteers, trained by the FA) and had a
session called: Proper Positining Provides Credibility. It
still does.

You're right but I suspect referees at this level are are not
encouraged by their trainers to go so far towards the goal line
as in days of old, the argument being that play has speeded up
immeasurably in the past few years, and a referee stuck down
near the goalline is at a big disadvantage if there is a quick
counter-attack. I support this argument, particularly as we now
have semi-pro ARs whose job includes patrolling the area around
the corner flag on their side.
