Did it continue? I always like to see a view on a referee's
overall performance.

time of the handling and his arm was further right, the clues
were all there.

his right foot, by definition it has to be at least on the line
and therefore deemed to be inside the area and a penalty.

You are going away from my original post. I have no idea whether
the arm was inside or outside the penalty area, as nothing was
proved either way on tv. When viewing from an angle it is
impossible to say where the ball is positioned in relation to a
line, when the ball is three feet or so off the ground.
I remember, many years ago, the late Jack Kelly making this very
point at a Lancashire F A referees training session in a sports
hall in Lostock, Bolton. He placed a group of around 15 young
referees in various positions either side of a line painted the
floor. He then held a ball in the air at various heights. In
almost every instance the vote was split evenly as to whether
the ball was on the line or which side it was over the line.
Anyway, that’s my last word on this matter, I still believe
there was an element of guesswork.

If one is not sure and therefore has to make a call then
sticking with the status quo or making the least contentious
decision is invariably what happens. I have no idea whether it
was a penalty or nor but I'm sure Farai Hallam had.

yes it did - it was a competent, confident and convincing
display from FH [emoji106] and as a game of football, it was
interesting right to the end

In which case if he had given a free kick it would have been a
guess too? I think the fair point raised was that there are
times you don’t ‘know’ so you have to use the clues, the
training, the clips and repeated examples to make A decision.

I think, potentially, 'clues' was originally used
tongue-in-cheek (that's how I read it anyway).
It is fact. The leg and foot was on the line. The arm was more
to the right than those. Thus, fact, it was within the confines
of the penalty area. Therefore, penalty. Not a contentious
decision that is in any way subjective. It is a matter of fact.

Or too often weaker referees won't make any decision at all and
then try and claim some spurious advantage was played.

Seen that done plenty!
Plenty of ball out of play decisions are guesses, when two feet
come together. You use the clues but the game has to restart.
Here if you didn’t know it was in or out, you couldn’t just not
give the handball.

For those who haven’t yet read it, may I point out that some
interesting thoughts on ‘guessing’ appear in last Sunday’s post
by Failed Ref under the heading “Times Article - The Impossible
job”.
(There may be a way to quote a post from one topic in another
topic, I don’t know - but even if there is, I suspect it would
be beyond my limited capability!).

I didn’t even know this was a rule - but Heggebo has been
suspended for 2 games for “deception of a match official”. This
feels appropriate for diving/simulation but I don’t agree with
the law in this situation - suspensions for a “deliberate”
handball feels like opening Pandora’s box.
