Mistaken identity

It’s late but at least common sense has prevailed mistaken
identity doesn’t mean the referee gave an incorrect free kick
“In a circular on Monday, the IFAB clarified VAR’s protocol on
mistaken identity to confirm the original offence should not be
overturned — as it was in the instances of Almiron and Embolo
receiving yellows for simulation — and it can only be done so if
the incorrect player was penalised based on the on-field
official’s initial judgement.”

I don’t know why they don’t just add simulation to the VAR
protocol, rather than something like corners. Seems an easy
deterrent

Then they need to rename it as "mistaken offence". I know its
pedantic, but the Laws of the Game used to be written in a way
that meant they could not be misunderstood. In recent years the
numerous changes, updates and subsequent clarifications suggest
this is no longer the case.

That is so true, Leggy. The laws now are another type of AI:
Ambiguity Itself.
They should never have messed with the brilliance of Sir Stanley
Rous’s codification from 1938. To quote Wikipedia: “Rous made
a major contribution to the game by rewriting the laws of the
game in 1938, MAKING THEM SIMPLER AND EASIER TO UNDERSTAND” (my
emphasis). The exact opposite of this has happened in recent
times.
Before anyone says it, I will accept that concepts like
“ungentlemanly conduct” did need updating for the modern age.
But to try and legislate for every little thing that might
happen, in the name of the holy grail of ‘consistency’’ was
always going to create more problems than it solved. The waters
were further muddied by the arrival of VAR, and this ‘mistaken
identity’ nonsense is just the latest piece of confusion - and
certainly won’t be the last.
Football: a once simple game in danger of being ruined by its
own authorities.

The problem is rather than make a rather simple adaptation to
fit VAR into the law, they’ve made the laws fit VAR. Which makes
the laws stupidly unsuitable for the 99% of games around the
world that don’t have VAR.
