       hi,
early episodes of 'the simpsons' (seasons 2 to 10 - approx. 1990
to 1999) are well worth watching both for their considerable
humour and satire plus a culturally subversive approach to the
       classic american nuclear family.
more recent editions should be largely avoided.
       regards,

Two matches were theoretically within reach: Thackley was
appealing, but with the recent fad for generous added time, any
further delay makes things rather tight for catching the bus
into Bradford, with the next being an hour later. The choice,
       therefore, was
       Wednesday 29th July 2026
       NCEFL Premier
       Campion 1 v 2 Retford
       Concession & programme £5. Pie & peas £5. Tea & Lucozade £4.50
       Attendance 147
George Rampling; Chris Hicken, Adrian Kisiel.
Memory plays tricks - I seemed to recall that Mr Hicken was a
little taller, leaner and older, but then every time I had seen
him before, he had been on the far side line. That's my excuse,
anyway. There were worries about bus times here, too, despite an
extra four minutes window, as on the only previous occasion I
had seen Mr Rampling, the kick-off had been seven minutes late,
three further minutes had been wasted at half time, leaving a
weary JCFC to walk back into Bradford. When the teams did not
take to the field until just before the scheduled start, worries
surfaced again, but the formalities were quickly completed, Mr
Rampling spared the captains the overlong lecture before the
toss and play got under way just two and a half minutes late.
Mr Rampling had an early decision to make, a Retford attacker
going down on the edge of the area, but neither Mr Rampling nor
JCFC saw any offence, though Retford players did. They went on
to look much the more dangerous attackers. They had a player
clearly held by his shirt in the penalty area. Sadly, the way
the laws have been watered down, this did not impede his
movement significantly, so no penalty resulted. And they wonder
why there is so much wrestling in the area. Mr Rampling was not
at fault there, but on 16 minutes the Retford winger was racing
deep in the area when he was held by the arm and this did have
an impact, resulting in his being unable to prevent the ball
from going out of play. This time a penalty could (should?) have
been given, but wasn't. Minutes later, at a free-kick for
Retford, Mr Rampling called for the home captain, who affected
not to hear him and eventually the referee had to go over to
him, but at least made him follow him back to where he had
wanted a word. On 20 minutes, the Retford number 9 went down far
too easily and nothing was rightly given. A minute later, a very
long throw into the penalty area was met with a good header
clear by Campion, but fell to Retford well outside the area and
was powered into the net, for a deserved lead. Six minutes
later, Retford were again bearing down on goal when their number
11 was pushed in the back, just firmly enough for his fall to be
legitimate. The whistle was blown, Campion rushed to protest,
but Mr Rampling's hand was already hovering over his back pocket
and eventually the home number 5, Matty Nebard, late of
Brighouse Town, was shown a red card. Campion immediately
brought on a defender, withdrawing the unfortunate blameless
       number 11, a fact which prompted a hitherto respectable-looking
lady to release a torrent of the worst sort of language that
might have made even those fluent in Parliamo Auchinleck to
blush, before flouncing off to give somebody a piece of her
mind. The free-kick was fired goal wards, the keeper could not
control it as he dived and Retford were on hand to tap the ball
home. Despite their numerical deficit, Campion offered a little
more and pulled a goal back on 43 minutes, before creating two
further good chances in the five minutes of added time.
JCFC was by now getting nervous about bus times, but Mr Rampling
was able to get things under way after just 14 minutes. Campion
soon had a great scoring chance, but did not make the right
contact. The Retford number 6 made ( possibly inadvertently, not
that that matters) contact with a Campion attackers heels as he
ran towards the goal and Mr Rampling received a whole series of
complaints that no card was shown. On the hour a Retford
attacked went down under what appeared from my angle to be a
superb tackle, but Mr Rampling was closer and awarded a penalty.
Campion players were not impressed and one received a yellow
card for his protests. One old codger in the stand, generally
supportive of the officials, came up with the quote of the day
"If referees had brains, there wouldn't be any referees." At
last the penalty was taken... and well saved by the Campion
keeper. There was a feeling that justice had been done. On 75
minutes, JCFC had his first experience of a new protocol:
Retford subbed a player, who, with Mr Rampling's attention
elsewhere, set off across the field and was almost half way,
when Mr Rampling turned him back to the nearer touchline,
resulting in the incoming player having to wait a minute before
being allowed on. On 80 months a good save by the Retford keeper
denied Campion an equaliser, but thereafter it was his opposite
number who produced two brilliant leaping touches for corners to
prevent further scoring. There was a late yellow card for the
home number 10. As the 45th minute of the half ended, JCFC rose
to head towards the gate, ready for a quick exit on the final
whistle. Rather than disturb the couple at the end of the row,
he chose to climb over the back of the seat to the path behind,
but in the words of Jonathan Agnew, didn't get his leg over and
ended in a heap on the concrete. There's no fool like an old
fool. Fortunately no damage was done and when the five minutes
of added time were over, the bus stop was reached with three
minutes to spare. Home was reached just 65 minutes after the
final whistle - and so to bed with a mug of tea and slice of
       lemon Swiss roll.
So what of Mr Rampling? His movement is fine, even in reverse
gear and he was willing to implement all the latest attempts to
speed things up. Twice he missed correct offside flags from Mr
Kisiel, the first time the ball ended up going for a free kick,
so the assistant sensibly took his flag down.On the second
occasion Mr Kisiel's bellow of "George, George" eventually did
the trick. When Campion scored their goal, all the players were
lined up for the restart, but he went and had a chat with AR1
before confirming the goal. Overall it was not quite as
impressive an evening's work as when seen last season, but then,
I know nothing - and most importantly, his timekeeping was MUCH
       better!

No mention of Mr. Rampling’s occupation. Given the fun we had
with your last referee being a geography teacher, I was rather
hoping your next one might be a lavatory attendant or a
gynaecologist. Then we could really have gone to town with the
wordplay - though probably only at the cost of bringing the blog
       into serious disrepute!

       hi,
careful - we don't want to get bogged down with this, especially
after being flushed with success on the previous one - probably
wisest to take a back seat before a chain of events causes us to
       loos the plot!!!

Brilliant, gooner! I’m just RELIEVED you went with the
‘lavatory attendant’ option rather than the ‘gynaecologist’ one.
Or have I spoken too soon?!?
