hi,
what!?!?! are you joking? [emoji15] the guy's the 4th highest
paid manager at this world cup finals (£5m per annum) - he
shouldn't be making basic tactical mistakes - even i know you
can't sit deep and defend for over half an hour against the
world cup holders without at least having a token forward player
as a target for the out ball (ollie watkins and ivan toney were
sat on the bench and they would be ideal candidates in that
position).
there is some good analysis of how messi adapted in-play last
night here...

For the first half-hour or so of this game it was as if I had
been transported back in time, watching football played — and
refereed — as it was sixty years ago. And then suddenly the
time machine was switched off and we were returned to the
present day. I have a theory about this: I have long suspected
that one of the reasons why international football is less
violent than it was in the 1960s is that nowadays the players
all know each other: they play in the same teams or against each
other in all sorts of competitions, and it is not really
possible to sustain over 90 minutes a violently aggressive
attitude towards someone you will be playing alongside in a
month's time.
There was one decidedly modern feature of the game: in all the
football I watched live and on television in the 1960s I cannot
remember seeing seeing a kick-off that had to be retaken, and
yet this has happened at least twice in this competition. I
would have thought that was one of the easier bits of football
to get right.

modern players are obviously unable to count backwards from 10
even with help from the crowd [emoji53]

I'm not joking, it's my opinion, and I respected yours but
disagreed.
I don't think his pay is relevant. He's tasked with winning the
world cup and last night he got it wrong... had he got it right
he'd be being hailed as a hero / genius.
Southgate messed it up in very similar fashion in 2018. Tuchel
is still a newcomer to international management which is a
different game to club management.
The media and fans will always be our biggest hurdle to winning
a tournament anyway. Just take the interviews with Tuchel and
Bellingham after the Norway game as an example.

Hi good afternoon.
Long time observer on here who is just interested in referees
and ex referees opinions on things and as such I have never
contributed to a thread.
I received a warning for using a dumb emoji today which was
totally by accident when scrolling I can only assume so
apologies for any offence caused and any inconvenience caused as
it was totally unintentional.

I think the referee officiated the game exactly how FIFA have
seemingly wanted the game to be officiated throughout the
tournament; keep cards away as much as you humanly could have.
I’d much rather have seen a few cards, and I’m sure those of us
down the refereeing ladder would be penalised be letting them
get away with some often the stuff that he did. But that’s more
on FIFA than it is him.
In regards to England; I thought they’d been pretty rubbish as
ever throughout the tournament. First actual good team they came
up against, they got beat. Bit like in 2018.
I read somewhere that we went a long period with only 12%
possession- that is embarrassing! Sitting back after going 1-0
up was never going to work. To then see us with as many
defenders on the pitch in the final mins as we did is also
embarrassing.
Tuchel would be sacked if it was up to me. Football has been
boring. Results not much better.
