I thought Shearer had decided he was going to be rubbish. He
wasn't. He was always in charge, maybe a bit unorthodox, maybe
not the way we're used to it in the EPL and UEFA but he
controlled that game from minute 1 to 90. Did it with his
tongue rather than his card and whilst there were a few cynical
nudges and tugs it didn't deteriorate like Paraguay did.
Technically I think Stones should have been off getting
treatment when he dropped his man as he should have had a minute
on the sidelines, but I doubt anyone will bother when he dropped
a man rather than got ahead of him.
England can have no complaints, you can't try and defend a team
of that quality on top of the goalie's toes for 25 minutes.
Self destruction. Fine to get away with it against a one
dimensional Mexico and a two or three real quality players
outfit like Norway but every single one of that team can harm
you.

I thought he was actually quite good.
Didn’t get sucked into the Messi histrionics early. Let a lot of
robust contact go as if he were an English Referee from “the
good old days”
He did apply that mindset fairly consistently
I would say something about Tuchel’s continual abuse and conduct
towards the Fourth Official.
Unfortunately - that disgraceful attitude won’t be reported by
the supine British “Free and Fair Press” as they continue their
long standing narrative of not calling out abuse towards
officials because - “he’s our man”

Just echoing a few others point. Was worried before the
appointment but thought he had a very good game. Was strong
early with Messi and a few flashpoints, yes there was a lot of
fouls but needed to be. I thought walking around with the yellow
card was unconventional, but I think we knew what he was trying
to do - show the Argentineans that he was in control and
cautioning.
Second half easier to manage with a game of football breaking
out, so overall can be pleased with his performance

Completely agree with this. The theatrics on the BBC comms were
a frustrating listen, the feigned shock when Messi wasn’t given
a free kick that wasn’t a foul. They were essentially accusing
the referee of bias from the first whistle but tried to disguise
it enough to not get into trouble. I get that there’s going to
be a “home team bias” but it makes for a poor experience for the
viewer.
Elfath did very well I thought, I liked that he got himself in
the middle of any altercations and physically pulled players
apart to defuse any situations. Possibly could have produced a
couple of other cards but nothing i’m going to get bothered
about. As others have said, nothing that will be held against
the officials, with all negative feelings towards Tuchel and his
team.

Absolutely he should have been off the pitch. He was required
to walk from the penalty area to the halfway line after
receiving treatment only to be waved straight back on as soon as
play restarted.
If the numerous officials patrolling the technical areas at
these matches can't consistently enforce the new Laws, what
chance do those of us officiating in non-league football have of
convincing players that they must remain off the field for the
required minute without an argument?

Bellingham’s slap to the back of his opponents head was such a
ridiculous cowardly act. I’m not even sure what caused him to do
so? Did the player say something? Not shake his hand? It didn’t
strike me that way. Or perhaps is he is just too upset after
losing and behaved like an immature spoilt brat.
I’m singling out Bellingham, and he deserves it in this case,
but this World Cup for me has shown that players nowadays are,
in large part, immature, lacking any grace or dignity, petulant,
entitled and the furthest thing from role models we could wish
to see.
Maybe I’m old fashioned but winning with humility and losing
with grace are important values in my book and they have largely
been thrown out the window.

hi,
prior to this game starting, i feel most of us thought the
referee was likely to have been wrong choice for this fixture -
now, without any shadow of a doubt, after watching the match, we
have to hold our hands up and say we were wrong - team ref coped
admirably with the occasion and the historic rivalry between the
two teams - and there was nothing remotely controversial in the
99+ minutes of play - congratulations to them all [emoji122]
the anti- tuchel comments, both here and on almost every other
platform, are totally justified. england's tournament, taken as
a whole has been pretty average - beating an ageing Croatia,
unable to break down a resolute Ghana, a good 10 minute spell
with 2 goals in an otherwise uninspired victory over Panama,
fortuitous against DR Congo when wissa missed an open goal for
2-0, backs to the wall in final 20 mins v Mexico after
obligatory kane penalty and rode luck v Norway towards the end
of the 90 prior to extra time. the fact that the FA have given
their backing to the manager shows lack of ambition and the
extending of his contract prior to this tournament is frankly
crazy. the lack of tactical awareness displayed (not just last
night, but throughout the 7 games played in the finals) is
worrying, especially as this management was bought in
specifically to get us 'over the line'.
at least losing last night will save us the embarrassment of
getting schooled by a vastly superior Spanish side in a final
(again) and no doubt a victory against an uninterested France in
a meaningless 3rd place match will be taken as an indication by
the media we are world beaters again.

Totally agree with your comments about the reffing team, but
totally disagree about England.
Do you think people all over Spain were slating them after their
draw with Cape Verde? Last time they won it I believe they lost
their opener to Switzerland too. If that was England, they'd
have had no chance after the media and fans were on their back
from minute one. Tournament football is about getting through
games. We did what we needed to in each game and the only time
I thought we would lose last night was after Argentina
equalised. (They were much the better side as soon as we went
1-0 up but I did think after they missed a couple of chances /
hit the post it might be our night... as it happens we probably
would have been better off either not scoring until later or if
Argentina equalised earlier.)
Southgate proved that he was unable to get us over the line and
we should have beaten Italy in 2021. This has a similar
feeling... Argentina were there for the taking last night...
they aren't that good, but we couldn't do it... but crucially...
it's Tuchel's first attempt. When Southgate had an arguably
easier path to the final on his first attempt in 2018, we went
very close on his second attempt. If Tuchel can learn from his
mistakes, we could be in a much better position in 2 years time.
