So far Elfath is managing to keep a lid on it, just. Hes done
better than I was expecting, but theres still 45 to go and the
pressure will only ramp up more. Yellow cards were needed and
calmed it a bit but the persistent fouling needs to be clamped
down on sooner rather than later.

A lot of amateur dramatics from both sides. A lot about nothing.
       Tuchel’s antics are unacceptable, however.

Nobody in the world of senior refereeing would have wanted or
expected a card for persistent, in this game, being the first
caution. And, in reality, the players wouldn't really have
       wanted it.

Kind of agree, but it was kicking off and he obviously got the
card out to show he was in control of it. It didn't look great,
especially as he couldn't find the player he was cautioning, but
he would probably argue it worked as it contained the
       flashpoint.

Agree with all that. When Anderson got booked, why did Elfath
take his yellow out quick and wave it around in the air? What’s
the point? It was like he was cautioning everyone there. Just
wait till it fizzles down or go straight to the player you’re
       cautioning.
       [/quote]
As much as I agree it looked messy, was it maybe to tell the
players the caution was coming? “I’m going to give the yellow so
       quit your pushing and shoving”

Correct. These games are officiated differently. The first card
has to be earned - particularly in *this* game and **this**
       World Cup.

So how many fouls does a player have to commit before he can be
booked for persistent? Anderson and Bellingham are both on pace
according to ai to end up as the 2nd most fouled players in a
       world cup game

There is no number. Cheap and soft cautions aren’t happening in
this WC. It’ll result in a caution when the ref believes it
       becomes a problem.

I do feel for the referee a semi final between two countries
like these it’s a honour to referee as semi final…but the
pressure on him must be enormous as because in my view and
plenty of others it’s a political appointment and not
necessarily on merit. I feel that so far as we approach the 52nd
       minute he’s been ok .
