       Messrs. Oliver, Taylor and Tello

I've just read that Michael Oliver, Anthony Taylor and
Argentina's Facundo Tello are ineligible to referee the Final
and 3rd Place Play Off, even if their teams are not involved.
Apparently, under FIFA rules, officials from England and
Argentina are barred from refereeing games involving each other
due to political conflicts, especially the Falklands Conflict 44
       years ago in 1982!
I make no political comment but I think it's sad that yet again,
politics interferes with sport, especially historical politics.

Well it didn't stop Horacio Elizondo refereeing England V
       Portugal W/C QF in 2006
So either it's a one way thing or has changed since 2006??

       That wasn't a final.
And on this subject, Hackett seems to think Michael Oliver was
only a young lad at the time of the Falklands War and won't have
       many memories of it.....

I wouldn't imagine that the writer of that BBC article has had
it confirmed by the decision makers at FIFA... but I do know
it's the case for English officials that they can't officiate on
Argentina matches. Presumably the decision makers at FIFA have
changed since 2006, so maybe it was thought unimportant back
then, but is now thought important by the current decision
       makers.

Nor Tello doing Scotland, I think, at the Euros? Never agree, on
principle, with teams vetoing officials. Has to be a neutral
decision which teams just have to accept, else it leads to the
impression that teams are controlling the choices or ‘bigger’
teams get to pick and choose. Do you think Cape Verde would get
to pick / reject a referee choice?

2nd world cup on the trot it has affected our officials. Anthony
Taylor in Qatar and him and Michael Oliver in 2026.
I can't remember exactly when the rule was changed but at the
time it was made it was a landmark anniversary and there were
political tensions at the time, at the very least it was made
before the WC in Qatar because it was active then.

The 40th anniversary was 2022 and, if memory serves, China came
out politically saying they support Argentinian claims to the
       islands.

No club or country should EVER be able to influence who
referees, or does not referee, their matches. The fact that we
all know some of them can, and do, is one of the biggest stains
       on the game.
In the 1970s, when I was still in my late teens/early 20s, I was
a league referees secretary. Because I was young and new to it,
a few of the established clubs tried it on with me, saying or
even just hinting that they didn’t want some referee or other,
and would prefer someone else, on this or that match.
My answer was always the same: you’ll get who you’re given, and
if you don’t like it, there’s a simple option available to you -
you can withdraw from the competition.
Funnily enough, nobody ever took up that suggestion!
I do of course realise that if those in charge of refereeing at
the elite levels nowadays took a similar approach, they
wouldn’t last long in their jobs, and that is sad.

Michael Oliver shares the same birthday as me… albeit four years
       apart…
