Much as I like Turpin and think he's the best in Europe, as soon
as the replay was shown from a different angle, my reaction was
that's not a penalty. It just looked a classic and obvious
example of the attacker putting his leg in front of the
defender, creating the contact and going down. To me, VAR was
right to intervene. If the onfield decision had been accepted,
the penalty scored, and if it had proved to be decisive, a lot
of neutrals as well as Norwegians would have been understandably
very angry. As it happened, England won anyway. They weren't
convincing but Norway lost their way in the final third, being
far too reluctant to cross the ball in my view.

It may well have hit the cable but anyone jumping to conclusions
that it did is questionable.
That is inconclusive at best. How can a referee onfield spot
that? And is that really in VAR’s remit anyway? I don’t think so

Is this your way of saying you don’t believe the footage to be
real?
[/quote]
Yes because there is a sensor in the ball to pick up any touches
on it , remember the disallowed goal earlier in the tournament?
And also yes x really isn’t a reliable source.

The fact that IFAB/Fifa have commented on it should tell you
that there is more to it than a fake/edited video…..
Correct, there is indeed a sensor in the ball. But that will
never ever be 100% fool proof.
As for X, correct again, it does hold a lot of false
information. That’s why you have to pick and choose your sources
from it. The one I shared, Melissa Reddy, is generally fairly
accurate in her reporting.

ITV have just showed the replay, the fact they have showed it
should say that it’s probably not fake/edited

Not really, as the video they showed didn't appear to show any
deviation on the ball whatsoever.

Erm, yes really. My point was that the video was real/unedited.
FIFA and the TV stations don’t comment if it isn’t genuine
footage.
Whether it did touch the wire or not, that’s something we’ll
probably never 100% know.

Big fan of Turpin, but agree totally. Just whistles and points
but no direction signal. If watching live in stadium, must be
impossible to know what’s going on sometimes.

"It just looked a classic and obvious example of the attacker
putting his leg in front of the defender, creating the contact
and going down"
I think this interpretation is fairly recent. In good ol' days
attackers were "entitled" to go where they wanted having played
the ball or chasing the ball.
Had Spence got his whole body in front and then clipped, is this
a penalty?
Is the deciding factor that the movement was not towards the
ball?
In real time, on first viewing, on a big screen in a pub garden
after a few sherberts...I cried out penalty!!
