Have to say, I expected a more experienced referee for our game
than Isaac Searle, with all the publicity that will surround
Southampton for at least the early part of this season - but he
is a referee I like, so i’m happy to see him get the chance of a
TV game. Reliable figures in Will Finnie and Dean Whitestone for
some of the other standout games.
I imagine many former SG2/NL referees will relish the chance to
officiate at one of the biggest stadiums in the country and Adam
Herczeg gets that opportunity first.

Don’t know a lot about Issac Searle, never seen him referee
before but that’s a good start to the season for him picking up
a televised match between L2 and Championship.
A rather normal set of appointments for this round with a couple
from the Pro Group in there (J Smith, Martin, Donohue and
Finnie) and a safe pair of hands for the Devon Derby with
Whitestone.

Pre-season friendly against NAC Breda at the Toughsheet last
Saturday, Carabao Cup tie at Hillsborough this Saturday.

Thought Jacob Miles had a good night tonight, though he didn't
need to do anything special. Nothing to report for the first
half, but the game livened up once Walsall got the goal 90
seconds into the second. A couple of yellows for Walsall which
the visitors can't have any complaints about. The hosts had one
or two penalty shouts which in my view were rightly ignored - in
part I feel the City fans were hoping for something to get them
back into the game. No major decisions for the officials to
make, the decisions they did make were par for the course.

My first time seeing Declan Brown, and I thought he was poor
overall.
First of all I’m going to rant about the ridiculous new head
injury guidance (not the referee’s fault). In the first half
Ebanks Landell goes down, but the ball is near the touchline so
the ref waits til it goes out to check on him, so he doesn’t
have to go off for a minute. 10 minutes later Jackson wins a
header and ends up on the floor, within 2 seconds he’s back on
his feet but the game had already been stopped so he does have
to go off. Slightly concerned this will cause a lot of issues
this season.
What also isn’t the referee’s fault is AR Mark Dwyer having a
howler of a game, but what is, is not giving a penalty for
Dieseruvwe saving a shot on goal, and starting throw in
countdowns a lot sooner for Bradford than for Rochdale. Foul
detection no better than average either. He’s lucky the game
became one sided in the second half.

A game of two halves imo from Ross. 1st half excellent, he gave
Crewe a penalty in the 6th min for almost a rugby tackle off the
ball (well the ball was being crossed in), I’m not sure if he
saw this so maybe went off advice from his team. The Accrington
manager wasn’t happy at all, however I loved it was given.
Did anyone else have a hydration break?? We did!!
Second half was boring for the most part, but it felt Ross gave
a lot of 50/50s to Stanley, which didn’t please the Crewe
faithful. AR2 said that Crewe’s winning goal went over the line,
in fact the first one was more than over but then we scored
anyway, it didn’t really matter. Ross gave a lot of soft free
kicks in this half, some weren’t even fouls!
Round 2? Wow. Crewe haven’t heard of that in ages!

Hydration breaks at Norwich
Not impressed with Elliot Swallow.
If you book 3 players in the first half for soft fouls that
could have been managed better, fine if that is the level you
are going to set but then somehow fail to book a player for the
worst foul in the match which resulted in the player going off
is very poor.
Sunny Gill as 4th official didn't like the blue bibs Norwich
wore in the first half because they clashed with the Norwich
goalkeeper so made them change to orange which just happened to
be the colour of the MK keeper in the 2nd half!
Not sure the throw-in count down works, if you wait a number of
seconds and then blow the whistle and then start the count down.
