Despite doing 3 UEFA finals I'm pretty sure Kovacs has yet to do
a knockout game in a major tournament (including last year's
club wc)

That’s correct. Last WC he was only there as a 4th and the CWC
he had a poor game in the groups so wasn’t selected again

the USA (how true that is i dont know) which would suggest
planned involvement in some capacity going forward. Kovacs I
dont know but he doesnt seem to be a favourite with FIFA from
what ive read?

I don't know if it just me but surely you've got to give it to
Taylor if possible this year? He hasn't had a dramatic spell
within the last 4 years and has, as always, been at the top of
his game.
I would give the final to Taylor over Oliver, not just because
of last WC's final consideration, but maybe that's just me.

It may be that Oliver and Taylor are viewed to be equal or very
close to it by FIFA. If that is the case, and if England and
Argentina (if the latter is still as issue) were not involved,
and it was a choice between the two of them, then perhaps it
should go to Taylor as it's his last World Cup. All being well,
Oliver could have 1 more as he will still only be 45.
With their different styles, they both usually have the respect
and confidence of players through experience and familiarity.
Both appear approachable without being too 'matey'.
That said, I have a feeling the Final won't go to a UEFA referee
this time.

I think Oliver's appointment puts an end to any further
involvement of Taylor. With only 8 appointments to give out (inc
the 2 QFs announced), can't see any way that FIFA give two
different English officials 2 of those 8. If England somehow
lose to Norway, then Oliver may be kept around. I'm still
sticking my neck out for Ramos or a CONCACAF final referee but
Oliver could be 4O if that's the case.
I'd be surprised if any other Europeans are still around other
than maybe Oliver, Marciniak, Turpin, Eskas and Nyberg, but
we'll see.

Looks like another seat is needed in the VAR booth for the
quarter finals onwards.
There's now a VAR, 2 x AVARs and a Support VAR...

In Qatar the support VAR was based in the ground, near the tech
areas with a monitor. The reason given was if the comms went
down with the VAR team, the support VAR would be in a position
to take over as VAR whilst the techie guys did their thing and
got comms restored.
No idea if this is the plan here but that was the situation last
WC.

ArbitroInternational on X (who I was getting VAR updates from
when posting appointments) claims there is 2 additionals, an
SBVAR and an SBAVAR.
VAR: Hernan Mastrangelo 🇦🇷
AVAR: Leodan Gonzalez 🇺🇾
SVAR: Tatiana Guzman 🇳🇮
SBVAR: Abdullah Alshehri 🇸🇦
SBAVAR: Mohammed Obaid Khadim 🇦🇪
“Stand-by VAR and AVAR will be at the stadium for the match and
will intervene in case there is any communication failure with
the VAR at the central hub in Dallas.”

Backs up what I said about the situation in Qatar then and
confirming it is the same here. They are a very ITK account from
what I have seen.
