When a referee, such as Tantashev, has a performance that sends
them home or hinders their progress in the rest of the
tournament, you do have to feel for their assistants, who
usually don't put a foot wrong.
It's like a chain of command. Referees essentially require their
country to perform poorly to get further, and assistants require
their referee to perform well to get further.
Some of these assistants may only get one or two shots at
getting closer to the final, and if their referee can't put in a
good performance, they are let down big time.

Without hearing any comms I felt all of his team could have
helped him at various points. Win as a team, lose as a team. One
could argue that ARs got HW the 2010 final (amongst other things
going his way).
Think Makkelie is a strong possibility for ENGNOR, though I’m
also of the opinion he’s rated on here a bit higher than by
those with power. I think the game suits his more laid back
style than the intensity of Marciniak.

Marciniak hasn't had a R32 or R16 so has to get a QF. ENG vs NOR
would seem sensible.
I suspect UEFA will keep at least Oliver and Turpin around in
case England or France get eliminated in the QF to be used in a
SF.
Would be surprised if UEFA get the final appointment this time
round. CONCACAF haven't had a final for a long time, and with it
being there, I'd bet on one of them. That means Barton, Elfath,
Ramos or Martinez. I think Elfath is out of contention because
of his fitness, and his mistakes in the last 2 matches. Barton
might be considered too volatile for a final, and Martinez is
probably lowest in the pecking order, so I think Ramos is
favourite. If not him, then I suspect it'll go to CONMEBOL with
Abatti maybe a favourite, but then a Brazilian got the opener.

The opener and the final have been done by the same ref before,
never mind the same confederation. Of course a Brazilian would
be out if Argentina are finalists.
To my knowledge no one has ever done Euros and WC final so
Letexier unlikely?

Can’t really disagree with this take. Disappointed in Elfath,
unusual to see a referee at this level that is clearly less fit
than the rest. I’d like to see Barton with the final of it does
indeed go to Concacaf. You missed Penso from the list of
Concacaf refs, would be the first time the same referee handled
consecutive women’s and men’s World Cup Finals… now that would
be a statement from FIFA. Although the final is unlikely I
think we will see Penso with another match before the end of the
tournament.

Yeah, I left Penso out because much like if the final was to go
to an English referee, it would almost certainly go to Oliver,
if the US were to get it, Elfath is their number 1. And of
course her performance in the final match wasn't great which
puts Ramos, Barton and probably Martinez ahead of her.

Following Abdulrahman Al-Jassim in 2022, I wonder if they will
continue a trend of giving the 3rd/4th play off to a host nation
ref, thus Penso may get that appointment

For an outside outside pick for the final, how about Adham
Mohammad Tumah Makhadmeh from Jordan? He was widely praised in
England v DR Congo and just navigated a high pressure USA v
Belgium match very well by all accounts.
Unlikely but he seems to be a FIFA favourite - maybe because he
has same haircut as Collina!

In the light of Mr Trump's "suspect referee" statement, any
decent and self-respecting organisation would immediately
pencil. Raphael Claus In for a rôle in the Final. I am not sure
(litotes!) that FIFA can be so regarded nowadays.

Hopefully Infantino and Trump aren’t going to try and influence
Collina into putting an American onto the final, unless Collina
feels one truly deserves it…
Wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if it did happen though..

Nothing would surprise me about in this World Cup. Following
UEFA’s response to the suspension row, I wonder if there will be
any impact to the UEFA referee’s appointments ?
