I thought he was absolutely fine to be honest and good that he
was able to adapt to a different type of game, particularly
without being able to rely on his people management skills built
up from his relationships with players in the Premier League

If Anthony Taylor was, as NRUReferee claims, “a fair way down
the list behind Oliver”, I don’t think they would have given him
a cracker like Portugal v Spain, a ‘sonorous’ game if ever there
was one - to use an expression beloved on a certain other blog!
My feeling is that FIFA holds them both in equal regard.

And I am pleased that FIFA do treat them as individuals or they
wouldn't be both in thus round
As this thread was about MO I was writing about him,; not
suggesting AT is not in the same position

I didn’t watch the game so I cannot comment on Oliver’s overall
performance but I did see a lot of generic football fans on
social media commenting on his award of 6YC’s in the 1st half
saying how this hasn’t been in line with what we’ve seen from
the World Cup this season. I don’t necessarily disagree but what
I don’t agree is the people saying he’s the worst referee in the
tournament because of this, even though I’m aware that’s the
norm when it comes to social media.
But would you rather someone be a bit stricter and keep a higher
degree of control on the game like Oliver did or have someone
like Tantashev who completely lost it. I know which one I’d
       rather.
I remember people commenting on here about Jarred Gillett’s
performance in the North London Derby a couple of years ago
saying he lost control because he gave 7YC’s in the first half.
But he never lost control of the game and the second half was
easier to officiate because he stamped his authority in the game
in the first half. I assume Oliver did something similar last
       evening.
Of course when we watch football as neutrals we want games to
flow with little YC’s but sometimes that’s an approach that is
needed to keep the game under control. Otherwise we get Paraguay
       vs France.
Hopefully that’s not the end for Oliver this tournament
(provided England don’t get too far).

Amazing, isn’t it, that there’s never a question on player
conduct when there’s a high number of interventions..?
Having had time to reflect, I actually think Oliver handled that
about as well as anyone could. Yes, 6 cautions in the first half
felt high but I didn’t feel any were actually avoidable. He was
on top of everything. He didn’t look relaxed, but difficult to
       be relaxed in that environment!
I think if Taylor put in that performance he’d get credit for
strong refereeing. But I think Taylor is more known for a
stricter style (even though I’m not convinced it’s necessarily
always true, I think he just comes across as sterner than
       Oliver).
But all ended without any major drama or complaint. Job done.

Compared to the garbage served up in the next game by Tantashev,
Oliver showed how to control a match that could have been an
       exploding tinderbox in exemplary fashion.
The match officiated by Tantashev was on a par with the Lahoz
       disaster in 2022.

Tantashev far worse. He made no effort to influence behaviour
through the sanctions available. Ergo failed to apply law.
Lahoz, I can’t really remember now except for the ridiculous
number of cards, but at least he tried. If the sanction of
yellow doesn’t work, you can’t stop giving them, and you can’t
start giving reds for yellow offences. It’s a fault of the laws
when a yellows don’t work as a deterrent.
If Tantashev had yellowed 6 Paraguayans yesterday and they’d
still carried on, that’s more on the players than the ref.

From memory, I really don't think Lahoz did anything wrong. The
players were determined to act like idiots, Lahoz wasn't afraid
to card as appropriate, but the players continued to act up, so
he continued to card as required. It irritated me at the time
(and still does) that he was seen as being responsible for it.

I thought he did well. At least he did the job unlike a lot of
       the referees at this tournament!
