Referee has obviously studied Harry Kane. Harry Kane doing what
Harry Kane does. Never a penalty. Can't understand why the
referee correctly identifies the dive and gives the FK to Congo
but doesn't seem to have booked him?!
Good cautions so far. All in all, a pretty good half from
Makhadmeh.

Agree with lots of comments here - beaten to it!
Thought ref was superb in first half - low key but excellent
control, nice manner - stern body language, when needed, but not
all the time and not overboard, waved away right things, correct
YCs.
I was expecting penalty but replay from behind is clearest - two
feet together and over looks dodgy / unnatural. After check
complete, he thumbs up the AR. Makes me think AR has helped, so
hope he’s saying well done, rather than the Elleray-style
blaming the AR just in case …
Refs do study the players now and Kane is keen on milking a
penalty …
Only issue is gesturing a dive - should’ve just waved it away
then you’re not committing to anything!

Despite the gestures, he didn't give a free kick - restart was a
goal kick.

Missed YC there for Konsa for a foul off the ball - seem to be a
lot of mandatory YCs not being given lately.

Not as good in the second half, seems to be doubting himself a
bit. Very similar to Meler’s performance in England-Slovakia at
the last euros

Well I guess there is a reason Darren Cann wasn’t allowed to
officiate England games! That said, he has always struck me as a
very fair minded person so I’m sure he is giving his unbiased
view as best he can. Not that his view is beyond question of
course.
I’ve yet to see the incident so can’t comment, however it does
strike me that perhaps FIFA prefer no penalty where possible
rather than simulation, as indeed they seem to prefer yellow
cards be avoided in general (though not the same extent as
previous tournaments).

I think the refs failure to card Kane for diving on the non
penalty incident played on his mind as his second half
performance was average compared to the first half - and in the
second half he missed clear fouls and clear YC’s

I think Cann was very fair. The side/behind looks more a pen
than not, the front on angle looks more a dive than pen. I think
Cann said though he just about felt pen, no review was also
correct. I’d go with that, it’s the kind of decision you can
split a room with. The keeper IS careless, BUT Kane makes it.
Thought he did fine first half, less impressed second half. His
“I’m not giving anything” style turned into “I don’t know what
to give.” Missed yellow for Konsa, arguably missed one (and the
foul!) by Anderson. Think there was one he missed on the England
wing too but can’t remember who.

It isn't a penalty for me, although it took the belated angle
from the side to see it. Kane was already on his way down well
before the contact, and also looked like his foot had kicked
against the floor.
The only thing the referee got wrong is clearly indicating a
dive and then restarting with a goal kick and no caution. That
is completely nonsensical.
