No idea how Cannobio wasn't booked during the game before his
last minute red card. He (unsurprisingly) overreacted to that
decision. Not the best of performances by Elfath but the players
didn't help him at times.

Uruguay are a nightmare to referee so I thought he did okay
actually. Was always going to boil over at the end if they were
losing, hopefully FIFA do something about Uruguay’s behaviour
that’s the second World Cup in a row.
Elfath still doesn’t seem to have fully recovered from his
injury. Not sure he could last 120 minutes in a fast paced
knockout game

I’d like to think he will get a good 4-5 match ban (possibly
FIFA enforced in the new season as they’ve been eliminated) for
grabbing Ismail’s shirt like that. You simply cannot do that.
If this goes unpunished, then that’s awful..

Bad conduct from Uruguay goes back a lot further than this and
the previous World Cup. Many of us will never forget their
thuggish behaviour in 1986.

Haven’t seen it yet, but wouldn’t hold you breath waiting for
fifa to take strong action. Never seem willing to be more tough
with serious poor behaviour when they have the power to be
ruthless with that type of thing.

The player was shown a red card and then proceeded to square up
and grab a hand full of Elfath’s shirt. If FIFA don’t take
action, then I give up.

Agree totally - as they’re out, it’ll be easier to do it. But if
they’d got through, they’d have had five games left. A RC for
SFP plus the misconduct should’ve been those five at the very
least - would they’ve done it?? I’d bet money if it was messi
/ronaldo, they’d give less so they could make the final, if
there … FIFA is just unwilling to be strict in protecting
referees.

FIFA seem to make no effort towards referess, as proven earlier
this tournament..
It will be awful to see this incident go unpunished, so
hopefully someone steps in.

Having now caught up with the game, I thought it was a very poor
show from the referee, one of the weakest so far which will
surely be rejected by FIFA. For someone regularly tipped for the
final, I don’t feel there would be any credibility in that,
especially as the standard has been generally very good.
Firstly, he did get two key decisions right - the RC and the no
penalty call to Uruguay.
Lots of issues though. He is clearly injured. Couldn’t sprint
and could be seen limping at times.
Basics - waving cards at players 30 yards away through groups of
other players (injury?)
Almost lost control, and this was down to letting too many bad
fouls go, including several missed YCs, and trying to solve
everything with body language. Knowing your teams is so
important - that approach was never going to work with Uruguay
and always going to make Spain twitchy.
The tackle before the final incident in 92’ also looked like a
RC to me - not just a cynical trip but a deliberate, dangerous
chop from behind, with no intention to play the ball. SFP or VC
- take your pick - but a RC for me.
What he was doing with URU14 is a mystery - fine to give a
public warning about persistence, but even at supply league
level, you should know you then have to follow though. After the
warning, he committed at least 3 cautionable offences: sustained
waiving imaginary card, a very bad tackle (very dark yellow in
own right) and running over from distance to push a player after
an incident.
He really shouldn’t make it further on performance principle, so
will be interesting if politics play a part …
