Agree about Esther Staubli. She and Bibiana Steinhaus were my
joint favourites among female referees. Both had a natural
presence, whereas I found Mme. Frappart rather stiff and starchy
in style (I would have found her a bit annoying if I’d been
playing!) and find Miss Penso a bit manufactured (the attempted
‘Collina stares’ in the Women’s World Cup just didn’t convince
from her - thankfully I think she’s dropped that now!).

I have always been in favour of a referee using their
personality in officiating because trying to be something you
are not can be easily seen through and is bound to fail. Judging
by this performance it seems to me Ms Penso has an empathetic
and relatable personality which she employs well; I just don't
think she is very good at foul detection.

Would have loved to seen both Gordon Hill and Roger Kirkpatrick
at a World Cup Finals back in the day

Ironically, I don’t think the special kits help or are a good
thing - if Garcia / Penso are there on merit, why the special
kits (which Elfath/Ramos presumably don’t have)?

Spot on. Never quite saw why Frapprt was so lauded. Never
particularly stood out amongst the other top female refs to me.
Personally never liked that she was quite
robotic/one-dimensional and showed no personality at all. Always
looked more shaky when a game got more testing and she never
seemed able to adapt.
Was surprised that the very-experienced Steinhaus - having been
promoted to the Bundesliga - wasn’t the one more pushed to try
men’s Uefa games. To me, she had the better impression, natural
personality and would’ve been there more on merit.

Agree, and also agree on Staubli. I thought Penso was average at
best in the Women’s WC and poor in the final, so to see her in
this tournament surprised me. I just wonder if politically she
will go further than she should, especially if Elfath failed to
deliver (which I didn’t see game 2, game 1 was fine).
