I only watched the second half but it looked to be very
difficult match to officiate, probably one of the most
challenging in the tournament so far. At times I thought it was
going to turn nasty. Barton has a very frenetic, sometimes
dramatic style but I like how he doesn't tolerate any nonsense.
I thought he was pretty good in a match which was hard to
control.

The Turkish guy running off like a toddler to snitch should also
be sent off for being pathetically annoying (but not sure that’s
in the new amendments.) 😂

The problem is that we don’t know what had been said. For all we
know, Almiron has said something highly offensive and/or
disgusting. Or he could have simply told him what he had for
breakfast. Problem is, we don’t know as he covered his mouth.
Almiron has one person to blame……

hi,
definitely an incident for pub quiz questions in years to come -
first player to be sent off at a WC for covering mouth when in
a confrontational situtation. understandably in the melee that
was going on, i don't think the ref spotted it, but the #18 for
turkey (or more correctly, turkiye), mert mulder, certainly made
sure AR1 knew about it.
as a previous poster has said, the onfield announcement and card
brandishing by ivan barton was priceless [emoji2]

It is clear as day that he did precisely what the sanction was
brought in for and I am glad that the process was followed and
the player dismissed.
However, the actions of the "aggrieved" player are pretty
"average" (as the Aussies would say). He went running to an
official to "dob him in". Almost like showing the imaginary
card, but 100% an act of Unsporting Behaviour. No-one likes the
school snitch.

While I can appreciate the nuanced ability of modern officials
to deftly navigate challenging situations and manage players
with a light touch, there are moments that require an old school
firm hand. And in this case Ivan Barton played that role
perfectly. Excellent announcement and determined body language
while issuing the straight red card.

Personally I was pleased Paraguay ended up with a player sent
off here as the stoppage was caused by their centre forward
faking an injury
And this is a great example of why the announcement was
introduced. I didn’t have a clue watching at home with the sound
off, so can’t imagine the fans in the stadium knew what was
going on!
