Clearly VAR stepped in after severity of Kone's injury became
clear. Garay originally issued a YC for #14 and it was upgraded
       shortly later.

Upgrading from YC to RC is allowed but you can't prove that it
was Kone's injury that triggered the upgrade in first place
unless VAR guys confirm it (improbable).

Spot on. Annoying that Unkel stated, as the expert, that it was
automatically a YC because it was a penalty. This isn’t true, as
it has to be a genuine challenge for the ball or realistic
chance of actually getting it - any upper body challenge (push,
pull, etc) when the ball us on the ground is still a RC. She
also stated ‘the point of contact’ is outside - should explain
that it could carry on into the area, as it is another common
misunderstanding that it has to be the first/start of the
       contact.
She should really make all that clear, as it’s important for
people to understand, and the commentator was saying it
       repeatedly as well.

Yes you can upgrade YC to RC, but VAR can’t just tell the
       referee to do so.

I remember when Stephen Purches suffered a double leg break at
Rochdale in I think 2012. The tackle wasn't even a foul, his
studs got caught in the ground and he was just very unlucky
where the Rochdale player caught him. Effectively ended his
career because he never fully recovered from it. Can't remember
the name of the Rochdale player but he was devastated and went
to visit Purchy in the hospital. Don't think he even got booked
for it & nor should he have.

Christina Unkel said on commentary at the time that there was no
VAR involvement in the decision to 'upgrade' the card; Dale
Johnson has also confirmed there was no VAR input.

Correct - Sat 18.02.2012, Rochdale player was Jason Kennedy
Rochdale 1, Bournemouth 0 - how times have changed!!!
