Canada v Qatar - Christian Garay

Very unusual one here the referee booked the player for a
challenge, Canada manager could be heard complaining to the 4th
official who was seemingly agreeing with the initial decision
and then a few minutes later with the player still receiving
treatment the referee decided to upgrade it before var got
involved. Due to the injury there hasn’t been a replay but that
is how itv say it happened.
I have now seen it back unfortunate injury do not think that’s a
red card

I’ve rewinded. It’s a careless foul. Really feel for Kone but
that is a poor decision. If the game was less one sided I’m sure
the correct outcome would have been reached.
I do wonder if VAR recommended a red card but no OFR to prevent
everyone seeing the replay. The reaction of the Canada players
was unacceptable and I also felt for the Qatar player who is the
victim of an unfortunate situation.
First red card was a good intervention, very hard to see it was
outside the box on field

The Qatari #14 was a sending off waiting to happen, he was lucky
to not already be on a yellow when the initial penalty and
caution were given! Peculiar with the second red being
'upgraded' from a caution on-field rather than after a visit to
the monitor. I think the Canada #22 has been fortunate to escape
a card so far given that every flare-up has involved him
reacting to Qatar's fouls.

Having seen the highlights, the first Qatar red card surely
should’ve been given when the penalty was given because it is a
DOGSO offence with no deliberate play for the ball so the double
jeopardy doesn’t apply here.
Of course that didn’t matter because the offence took place
outside which meant it was an easy red card decision. But it
felt like a poor decision to initially go caution because I
didn’t think it was a deliberate play.

Mike Dean had a similar incident at Birmingham when he sent off
a Birmingham player after only discovering Eduardo had broken
his leg.
That time there was no yellow but a delay before he thrust out
the red.

It's a (poor) attempt to challenge for the ball IMO so a caution
would've been right had the foul been inside.

Initial contact is a trip so yes dogso yellow is ok if inside.
Not seen any more than highlights with no replay on the second
red, but harsh to say Canada’s behaviour is unacceptable given
they can see a fouled player down with a clearly broken leg.
Emotion takes over. On that basis, no OFR or announcement seems
a sensible choice.

The aftermath of the challenge is completely ridiculous and
unnecessary and happened again at the end.
It’s a harsh red for me, judge the decision on the tackle itself
not the outcome. It’s nothing more than reckless, yes it’s sad
the player got injured but that’s football

I can only think that the challenge ticked two of the boxes.
It's difficult to see how a leg breaking challenge, however
innocuous the intentions, has not been delivered with "excessive
force"
The ultimate outcome of serious injury, again despite innocuous
intention, surely means that it was likely to endanger the
safety of an opponent
On it's own merits, and in isolation, without the injury, I
would personally have judged it a cautionary offence

Peter Walton came to our society a number of years back and
discussed his red card for Ryan Shawcross, for a challenge he in
Aaron Ramsey that resulted in a leg break. He said that he
didn’t think it was actually worthy of a red card, but once he
saw the broken leg and the reaction of the Arsenal players, he
felt he had to send RS off for his own safety more than
anything.
