Congrats to Scotland on their victory, rather fortunate though
and doesn’t bode well for the rest of their tournament.
I thought Ghorbal was pretty poor and played it very safe,
always favouring the defending team in 50/50s and allowing very
little contact which made it a hard watch.
He had 2 KMIs, a possible handball by Hanley from a shot on goal
around 75 mins, I thought Haiti had a case but only one replay
shown. The second was in injury time when McLean went in high
with studs showing, but there was only glancing contact so I was
happy with just the yellow.

Thought Ghorbal was poor, despite being very experienced. Very
one dimensional - same whistle and body language for everything,
no personality. Far too many soft / non-fouls which frustrated
the players and made it even scrappier. Missed two YCs for
cynical fouls at start of second half - one for each team.
Challenge at end looked like clear SFP to me. Interesting to see
how he’s used again - my guess would be a token political second
game in a dead rubber?

Bit harsh? A few soft fouls but I think I prefer that to the
legalised wrestling we’ve started to see over here the last few
years. We need to get over our own expectations and criticism of
whistling as it’s all different styles and languages.
Admittedly I was making my breakfast at the start of the second
half so any missed cautions are on me. The yellow at the end
could’ve gone higher, it’s an opinion decision and we’ve seen
both given.

A very frustrating watch. 44 fouls in a game that wasn’t played
in that manner.
A number of very soft fouls given against attackers at both ends
including some that frankly weren’t. Also a few very obvious
advantages missed as well. The US fans around us in the ground
were joking that he’d been taken from the NBA given his
determination to penalise all physical contact.
That isn’t what we come to expect at a WC.
Ghorbal blocked a Haiti clearance at one point that was clearly
going to a Scottish attacker, and returned the dropped ball to
Haiti.
The potential SFP was fortuitous for Scotland. Even from the
opposite corner of the stadium I was expecting a red.
Perhaps over-compensation out of fear for a repeat of the
opening game, but there are better methods of management.

I didn’t watch the game so don’t know if this was consistent,
but the below is doing the rounds of a potential loophole for
the throw-in law change
With the countdown, we know that the player doesn’t technically
need to have the ball in their hands. But has anyone seen any
guidance around when the count should or shouldn’t be started?

Thought the referee was pretty poor. It was a struggle of a
game and he broke it up with lots of defensive fouls. That
being said when Scotland were 1-0 up that was absolutely fine!
He could have sent off Kenny McLean for the studs up challenge
on the knee.
