Don’t know about anyone else but I’m still not used to Makkelie
with short hair!

51 mins in - Why on earth are we reviewing yellow cards at the
screen now? Have I completely missed something in these new law
changes?

Well I've never seen an OFR used to correct a YC. And also, play
had restarted?! That's surely not in the VAR protocol? Screen
said mistaken identity but a) that would be factual and not
require an OFR and b) it wasn't mistaken identity anyway. If
that's outside VAR protocol, either Makkelie and/or Cerro Grande
are likely to be hung out to dry...

Will be very interesting given that the correct decision was
reached.... albeit in a manner some won't have expected
The general public (dare I say those "new" to soccer) will see
it as good officiating as an error was corrected. Not sure the
footballing purists will agree as it not in the remit
Damned if u do...

According to the BBC's guide to the law changes for the World
Cup:
Mistaken identity: This is an incredibly niche addition which
Collina requested. If a player is booked or sent off but the
foul was actually committed by the opposition team, the decision
can be changed.
So maybe it does count as mistaken identity, although I'd say
it's still a bit of a stretch...

I hope for DM's sake it is justified as I think he is a great
referee and would have him on any/all England games (similar to
his boss in his pomp)

I doubt that Makkelie and the experienced VAR would
misunderstand the process so badly - but textually speaking it’s
difficult to understand how the new protocol allows what they
did. It isn’t mistaken identity it’s just misinterpretation of
what happened.

As much as it was helpful to rectify a mistake, it quite
literally is on the line of re-refereeing the game.
I also find it hard to understand how it is ‘mistaken identity’,
because no identity was mistaken, it was the actions of
Ream/Almiron that was mistaken..
