For a game that’s played out the majority like a training
session - 3 Red Cards?
If this is how they’re going to attempt to control games - then
I won’t be watching any further games after this one.
More dismissals than goals…

Part of the criteria to be FIFA listed, is to be proficient in
English.

While I agree with your sentiment I had always thought that it
was a requirement to speak English to a reasonably high level to
be a FIFA referee. Can’t recall the level, for some reason B2 is
in my head?

Id’ve thought Brisard would’ve had some input in this but
clearly not. I thought he was highly regarded within UEFA, so
must be decent.
But, I don’t have a clue how he is in L1 or in general, so I may
be corrected.

No complaints with the Sithole one. The Zwame one you can kind
of see, but I don't think it's particularly aggressive or
brutal. I don't think there'd have been many complaints had it
not been given or given as a YC. Surely it should have resulted
in a free kick to South Africa though given the Mexican
initiated the contacted by deliberately blocking his run, with
the 'VC' retaliation? As for the Montes red card, I thought for
all the world it was a YC. He clearly had lots of input from
AR1. This I think goes in the category of 'referee's call'. It's
an opinion call IMO, so hard for VAR to overrule, although I'd
have been happier with a YC.
Interesting start for Team One...

I think the english requirement is only for european FIFA
officials, the requirements are region specific i think

The first red card is a no brainer, but the subsequent two are
laughable to say the least.
With Collina, plus notably the head of FIFA and other big
dignitaries, this hasn’t been a good start to the tournament.
VAR is once again the centre of attention, and is getting
involved when they should be staying out of it.

Sampaio is not highly regarded by me after his poor showing in
England v France at the last world cup! But tonight was nothing
like that. I thought his general foul detection was good and
they were all red cards. The on field announcement was poor
calling SFP over VC. Whether his English is really poor or he
struggled with the pressure of his first announcement is
unclear.
I particularly liked the final red card for Mexico - if you
remove the defender the attacker has a clear shot on goal. He
went straight for the back pocket, then seemed to hesitate a bit
and lean towards yellow but stuck to his gut and went red,
correctly! Good performance (other than the excessive use of the
whistle)

If that’s DOGSO then I’ve got a bridge to sell you
And if you’re dithering between two separate pockets then it’s
obvious you can’t make a clear decision so going to red is a cop
out as he’s hoping VAR will bail him out for his poor judgment

It’s dogso for me but I do see both sides of the debate. The
violent conduct is crystal clear too and a good intervention
