want an advantage where Delofeu isn't really going anywhere and
his strike partner is on the ground prone, or do they want the
chance to regroup and launch the ball into the penalty area to
try and take advantage of one of City's few weaknesses (i.e.
defending aerial balls)? Think I know what I would prefer

But surely it’s not the referees call to decide what a team
would prefer, depending on their own strengths, or the opponents
perceived weaknesses. He probably made the wrong decision on
that occasion, but that was a very minor blip in a generally
good performance from a referee who is quite a way down my list
of favourites.

Not sure I agree there. Advantage should benefit the team that
have been fouled, and in this case Watford had Deulofeu running
towards a wall of Man City players with his strike partner prone
on the floor, is that really an advantage?
I've had several teams say to me before the game that they would
rather have free kicks than advantage be played. As a referee
there is nothing wrong with thinking about what advantages the
fouled against team, they have, after all, had an offence
committed against them so should receive the best outcome for
them.

I don't think it is wrong for a referee to factor in a team's
playing style when deciding whether playing on is most
advantageous to them or not - UEFA recommend that consideration
also be given to the score line and the context of the game
(e.g. if a team is 1-0 up in injury time they would probably
prefer the free kick than an advantage.)
In this instance, I think it was odd to wait so long and then
pull it back when Watford had the ball in a promising position.
I felt their best opportunity for scoring was counter-attacks
(which indeed led to their best chance of the game) so I would
rather have had advantage if I was them than a free-kick from a
very central position around the halfway line.

Which incidents please? Cant remember any others today where
penalties were awarded?? Excellent and very consistent display
frommr friend today, just a shame the match was so poor.

PSG v M United
Tottenham v M City
Several games in Spain and Germany I’ve seen, do I need to go
on?

This Isn’t Spain or germany, Uefa Have a different interpretion
to handball that our FA Does, Under Our Fa’s Interpretion,
Friend Was Correct not To Award A Penalty.

I think that it is certainly fair to suggest that there has been
a notable contrast in how handball is interpreted in domestic
matches in England compared to abroad.
One hopes (but perhaps does not expect?) that this will become
more standardised next season following the upcoming IFAB law
changes and the widespread introduction of VAR at the top level.

Very decent performance from Friend. I'm glad his big day went
well for him.

Not sure this could be called a counter attack or a promising
attack though as Man City had players back in position and
Watford only had one attacker with their other attacker flat on
his back. I think it only drew comment because Friend initially
tried to play advantage, had he immediately given the foul no
one would have batted an eyelid.

I think one of the biggest compliments I can give Friend is that
I don't really remember him having to make many crunchy
decisions, or noticing him all that much either.
It could have been the 2am alarm though!

I couldn't disagree more. It is absolutely the referee's job to
do exactly that. The best referees have an understanding of,
and empathy, with the game.

Having an understanding and empathy with the game agreed, but
not with one team over another
