Is that the reason given? Obviously it's far more likely that a
goal might be scored from a corner than a goal kick.
However what's the difference between giving a team a
goalscoring situation they shouldn't have and taking away a
goalscoring situation they should have.
To my simple mind, unless someone can rationalise it for me,
it's just another nonsense, idiotic decision.

Far more emotion attached to an incorrect corner that actually
does result in a goal, however unlikely, compared to an
incorrect goal kick (that if it was correctly awarded as a
corner most likely would not result in a goal anyway).

Playing Devils advocate (as I think you're right) surely VAR
should be used to correct a decision regardless of what it is?
So we can rerefeee to prevent wrong corners but we can't
rereferee to prevent wrong gks
We give accidental handball if a goal results but don't penalise
it anytime else
Check for fouls if goal results but not at any other time
2 tier football, often penalising the attacking side

Despite my reservations, it’s actually worked pretty well. It’s
a far better use of VAR on factual decisions only. My biggest
worry remains in that seeing it working will open floodgates to
throw ins and goal kicks and suddenly everything is reviewed.

1 rule change ( although not relating to referees ) that i think
is a massive mistake is changing groups so that they are decided
on head to head first. We are seeing teams that have won their
first two games already qualified in first place meaning that
the third game is a dead rubber and they can rest their whole
team or players on a yellow card and likewise teams that have
lost two are already out and can't even qualify as one of the
best third placed teams. Surely goal difference is better, at
least then teams still have a chance of their position changing.

Of the first four groups where each team has played twice, head
to head means:
Group A
Mexico finish 1st - but could have been 2nd on GD (goal
difference).
South Korea finish 2nd at best. - could have been 1st on GD.
Group B
Canada & Switzerland will be 1st or 2nd,
Bosnia & Qatar will be 3rd or 4th
- All 4 could end on 4 pts and on GD any one could have been top
or bottom.
Group C
Haiti finish 4th - could have been 3rd on GD.
Group D
USA finish 1st - could have been 2nd on GD
Australia & Paraguay 2nd at best. - either could have been 1st
on GD
Turkey finish 4th - could have been 3rd on GD.
On GD Haiti and Turkey would be going into the last group match
with at least a chance of making it to the next round.

Here is a suggestion ...
When a player goes down after contact with an opponent clutching
his face and screaming blue murder the referee should ask him:
"What happened?"
When the player reports that his opponent has hit him in the
face and should be sent off, the referee should say: "OK, I
will send him off for violent conduct. It will - of course - be
checked by VAR (with its 20 cameras and three eagle eyed
officials) and you might be a caution for simulation. Are you
sure you want me to show the red card?"
Lets see how that goes after a few reviews .....

UEFA have said they will not take up the rules of red cards for
mouth covering, as well as VAR intervention for overriding
yellow cards and switching them to an opponent, which has been
classed as a form of mistaken identity.
