And that’s why having VAR in a game where both sides haven’t had
it for almost 50 games splits opinion.
It’s probably not going to affect the final outcome and Peter
Bankes is right based on what we’ve seen this season to give it.

This hair pulling has got too extreme now surely it gets looked
at over the summer. It’s an absolutely ludicrous sanction for
something so unintentional, and then you’ve got players going
round headbutting opponents and no bother. Just glad it hasn’t
decided the result today

How can you unintentionally pull someone's hair? I don't really
see any doubt on this one, very difficult to see real time but
easy to spot with multiple replay angles. And on this occasion
the defender earns extra donut points for being stupid enough to
do it in his own penalty area.
For the foul it will come down to what was said on VAR. If Josh
Smith said he hadn't seen the trip, and it was a trip because
the defender was in front of the attacker, Peter Bankes is
always likely to get involved. Whereas if Josh said he had seen
it but deemed it normal football contact VAR would stay out.

Frankly some recent decisions have become a laughing stock. A
short slight tug of an opponent's pony-tail - violent conduct.
Smash your arm into an opponent's face with malice or a
perceived headbutt - ah no, it's only reckless at worst.
Quite right olliebcafc. What constitutes VC and SFP, and what
is only reckless has surely got to be reviewed. And better
recognition of SFP is needed by some referees with clarity as to
when VAR should intervene.
I didn't see the disallowed goal but interesting that some
contributors regarded it as re-refereeing.

Totally agree, dont be surprised if a lot more players have long
hair next season in PL if this continues. Today is a perfect
example of what we are seeing, defenders blindly reaching to
make contact with the player and hold the shirt so they know
where they are. An inch wrong with the hand and long hair down
the back, instead of shirt he gets hair for a split second.
Suddenly its a pen and red whereas if hed got shirt its play on
and no issue. Ridiculous and another example of over-forensic
VAR. And the PGMOL wonder why the Championship voted against any
form of VAR for next season

Both players attempted to grab the others shoulder, one has hair
in the way that's how you can unintentionally pull someone's
hair

He’s not even looking at him. I’ll ask you the question how can
that be deemed violent conduct or brutality? It isn’t.
It had to be given as a red based on what’s been given this
season (apart from Calvert Lewin who got away with it), so no
blame on Josh Smith who refereed the game very well only to have
any KMI decisions made by somebody else. Not blaming Bankes
either as they are only doing as they’re instructed but if this
is the way we are using VAR we are doing it wrong

If he was trying to grab his shirt, and he really wasn't, that
is a weak argument as grabbing someone's shirt isn't allowed.
It wasn't blindly, he had a look before grabbing his hair.
And the Championship clubs rejected VAR because of the cost, not
because they don't like it. They had the option of paying a lot
of money for it or going for the VAR-lite option and seeing
issues like they are having in Scotland.

In the same week we saw Cucurella bear hug someone to the ground
a second before the corner was in play, so penalised with only a
yellow and a retaken corner, we see this.
If it had been on the shirt it wouldn’t have met criteria for
OFR as it wasn’t impactful or sustained, but he’s caught his
hair so it’s a pen and red.
We’re not getting the balance right in the overall scheme of
things.
When people said hair pulling should be a red card, they meant
the ones Katie McCabe did (and didn’t get penalised for!) not
this.
If you want to make “holds with excessive force” a send off and
encompass things like Cucurella or Chiellini in the Euros final,
I can get on board with any hair pull also being red, but we
need to rethink. Both are invasion of personal space.

If Taylor or Oliver had been refereeing and given the two
decisions referred to I doubt whether any referee on VAR would
have called them to the monitor
