Consistency.
I know it’s been talked about for years and is impossible to
achieve but the best argument we ever gave non refs was for the
ref to be consistent in the 90 mins. I think we’ve lost that and
given fans legitimate calls against inconsistency. Attackers and
defenders treated differently, not just with handball which is a
LOTG problem but the treatment of contact. Then you’ve got
defenders allowed to steal 10-15 yards at throw ins but every
attacking restart taken to the blade. Anything-goes first halves
followed by everything’s-a-card second halves.
I just think everything is overthought; get back to refereeing
by instinct and giving what you see.

Those two things are mutually exclusive, if referees go back to
refereeing by instinct you won't get better consistency. To get
anywhere close to consistency, and it will never really be
achieved due to the subjectivity of most decisions, there has to
be a playbook so that all referees react the same way to
specific situations.

I disagree, on the basis they are less instinctive and less
consistent than they’ve ever been.

Wot, no 'Acme Thunderers', whatever next?! Seriously, I saw
Oliver Langford in action a few years back and was quite put off
by the level of noise from his whistle. Same in some European
games, Felix Brych being a particular example from days of old.
Consistency - I'm all for consistency but not at the expense of
entertainment and keeping the game moving. I've no problem with
defensive throw-ins being moved up a bit but not attacking
throw-ins (forward or back), Ditto free kicks for which we have
the magic spray anyway. One suggestion on RTR which I would like
to see implemented - ball must leave the goal area at goal kicks
before being deemed in play. But that presumably is for UEFA or
FIFA rather than Howard to decide.

Arteta being confined to his Technical Area and properly
sanctioned if he doesn't

Electric fences around the technical areas. It works for sheep
and cattle!

hi,
i'd go a little further - put seatbelts on dug-out seats. if
they are unbuckled whilst the ball is in play, it should set off
an audible beep like it does in your car [emoji4] it could even
be linked up show a flashing light above the offenders seat
[emoji106]
regards,
gnr
