It's a shame about the missed red card as he was very good
otherwise. Kept himself out of it given it didn't need his
constant intervention or becoming card happy, and got some close
penalty decisions all correct. But the Havertz challenge is
definitely a red. Should have been spotted on the pitch and
certainly reviewed after VAR. Can only think Bell didn't think
there was enough force, but the height, angle and distance from
the ball all make it SFP IMO.

I’m a very heavy defender of referees - they have an incredibly
difficult job where they work in a field where they get very
little praise and a lot of criticism. VAR is also not as easy as
a job as some make out. The subjectivity of decision making in
football makes it almost impossible to maintain a high level of
consistency.
But… it has to be said.
I’m starting to become a bit sick and tired of constant errors
by the match officials. It is becoming every weekend now and it
shows no signs of slowing down.
Howard Webb’s show is starting to become a real shocker. His
constant use of ‘what football expects’ and ‘what the game
wants’ is a terrible explanation to justify certain blatantly
incorrect decisions.
It feels like every weekend we are commenting on controversial
decisions when the correct outcome should be obvious. As a
previous poster mentioned, apart from Oliver and Taylor, we have
very little quality in the rest of our officials. Kavanagh,
Bramall, Harrington, Bankes have all had good seasons but
there’s not much to say for the rest of them.
A thorough review of the season is required as soon as possible
because there are so many problems to rectify. From detecting
SFP to hair pulling incidents, there is a real inconsistency
across the board and it needs to be solved as best as they
possibly can.

Unfortunately I think the referees are running scared as they
just don't know where they stand. They have a boss that seems
to be more interested in what the game and stakeholders want
than what the laws demand, and that cannot be an easy situation
to be in. Unless Webb sorts this out he won't be in position
this time next year as the Premier League won't put up with the
constant outrage, they shouldn't have any say but as we all know
they (wrongly) partly control PGMO.

I can't understand all the concern. It is a much better, fairer
game these days than it ever was.

Blimey, that is a horrendous decision.
I’ve said it so many times; too many (probably majority) of the
current crop are woeful at detecting SFP. It’s really getting to
the point where Howard Webbs position becomes untenable

A very good post but i would that the referees on field are
hamstrung by the guidelines coming from Mr Webb, its high time
he was removed from his post and a replacement found that is
willing to allow referees to referee by the laws of the game and
not trying to appease everyone. Refereeing is about applying the
laws correctly not appeasing clubs because they cant control
their players.
With regard to the Havertz incident, this is what var was
brought in for and yet again
We find a lack of competence in coming to the right decision. If
that isnt clear and obvious then Wolves were right get rid of
var if the pgmol cant use it correctly.
I laugh at memes on social media showing Howard Webb collecting
Arsenals player of the year award but should i ? Its getting
that serious.

Id argue the top level game is in the worst state its been in
for decades in terms of officiating. Referees are petrified and
panicked of making mistakes and VAR is its whole own
conversation. No one knows what's what and its making the game
unwatchable.
Our top level officials these days outside of the Elite 3 are
Attwell, Madley, Jones, Gillett, England and the list goes on.
This time 10 years ago we had Dean, Marriner, Moss, Friend,
Atkinson, Clattenburg. Although some of those referees were by
no means the best, they were most times a safe pair of hands who
you could rely on. Officials today are the opposite. Its like
comparing chalk and cheese.
Webb has to go. Then again, even Collina would be hard pushed to
fix this mess.

I remember in the latest Mic’d up Michael Owen said that was the
last programme of the season.
They could fill another one with this weekends incidents
already.

Let’s just pack up now.
James Bell shouldn’t be allowed near a football field again if
he can’t see that’s Serious Foul play. The fact Tierney missed
it as well.
It’s always the smaller club that gets shafted by VAR in England
or any other country.
As for Arteta’s antics he should have been booked a number of
times but he got a cuddle of Rob Jones.
