Motherwell vs Celtic - John Beaton

What do you think of the VAR penalty call? I can't help but feel
like that is not what VAR is brought in for - if the game
carries on nobody notices or says a thing. Also with the power
he got on it - i'm not sure the ball travels like that if it
hits his hand!

The hand is raised but it is even less clear whether the ball
hits that or the head than the Sesko hand ball, surely they had
other angles to show.
I’d also like to see another angle of Motherwell’s penalty
appeal around the 60th minute

Rubbish decision.
VAR couldn't wait to get involved when nobody appealed on the
pitch.
A real shame, as Motherwell deserved a draw, and this has had a
massive impact on the title race.

I’m not sure if it even hits his hand. It’s a massive shame that
if Celtic do win the title on Saturday, that this is one of the
moments that it’ll be remembered for, and not the fact that this
has been one of the most entertaining seasons in Scottish
football in decades.

I can’t see the ball change direction after it comes off the
head - and if he had handled it then surely it wouldn’t have
kept travelling at that speed?

Not trying to draw comparisons but are these the types of
decisions we get when processes get rushed too quickly in VAR
and this leads to potentially reckless decision making. Beaton
wasn’t at the monitor for long either. Compare that to Sunday
where a thorough check occurred but ultimately got the correct
decision.
I thought the penalty was very very harsh and was unconvinced it
hit the arm.

The hearts manager is not happy with the decision, not sure how
strict it is in Scottish football but he might get in trouble
for these comments
"When they were checking a 96th minute penalty, you assume they
[Celtic] are getting it," Hearts head coach Derek McInnes told
Sky Sports after Celtic's late spot kick kept them a point
behind the league leaders going into the final game in Glasgow.
"It's disgusting. We're up against everybody. I don't think it's
a penalty.
"If I'm Motherwell, I'm really disappointed. It's so poor and it
looks as though [Celtic] have been given it. They are very
fortunate."

McInnes shouldn't have said it but he's bob on, and hell I hope
it puts a seedling of doubt in whoever gets the game on
Saturday's mind. I thought Beaton was rubbish tonight, seemed
absolutely determined not to risk anyone saying he'd done
anything to derail the Celtic title ride. The whole game the
tarriff for a Motherwell free kick seemed much higher than a
Celtic one - they had three or four before I think we'd even
touched the,. Maeda needed three off the ball chops to even get
booked. And at the end if that hit Nicholson's hand I want to
know what the foxtrot his hand is made of because mine certainly
couldn't send a ball 30 yards like that. And the whole VAR
thing looked very rushed and haphazard.
I don't think our earlier claim was a penalty, I think Slattery
slipped into McGregor which was a shame as goal of the season
was brewing.
Proud of Motherwell last two games - we've played very well and
morally haven;t lost to either. I wanted to shirk that horrible
kingmaker tab, and I think we have managed it - Andrew Dallas
and John Beaton, without a doubt have placed one green and white
hooped hand on the title trophy so they can have it.
Totally scunnered with football tonight, Easter Road on Saturday
right now feels totally empty.

I tried to post this earlier in the week but don’t think it ever
uploaded due to poor train wifi! I tend to watch a game or two
per month of the SPFL, but a lot more this season with the
fantastic title race.
Firstly, I think it probably has hit his hand but John Beaton
absolutely cannot be sure after a few replays in 20 seconds.
Even if there wasn’t a better angle available, he should have
been shown one to show clarity of mind, rather than having his
mind made up before he gets to the screen and following whatever
VAR’s told him.
A general point - every John Beaton game I see seems to have at
least 1 questionable/controversial at best incident, he seems to
be a magnet for headlines and at some point, you have to look at
what he’s contributing to the game to say that i’m not sure
that’s just bad luck. He gives a presence that some big moment
is coming.
On the other hand, Nick Walsh I think is an excellent referee,
he’s clearly Scotland’s finest and I’d like to see him get the
rewards I think he deserves by having more appointments on the
international/european stage. Like others have said, I think the
sensible thing to do would be to waive the recency rule and put
your best referee on the biggest game of your domestic league
for years.

An absolute scandal.
Unless his hand is made of Kevlar, it is impossible for the all
to have reacted like that.
