Boro fan, not too disappointed with him really. Pen on Strelec,
maybe, but not enough for me. It’s two loose feet connecting, if
Strelec had the ball it’s different. Pen for handball, no way.
Pen on Scienza, not enough. Pen by Fry, not enough. So he’s got
them all right for me.
Some daft fouls by Boro, we let them win the fight when we were
winning the football match and got brought down to their level.
As an aside, I’m amazed by the comments on here from people who
watch football and referees regularly who couldn’t recognise
that he was clearly following discrimination protocols.
The spy gate will be what it will be but it’s clear football
must introduce sporting sanctions rather than fines asap.
Manager steps out of line…red card first time, pints the next.
Ball boy prats around, costs his club a point. The circus that
the game has become would stop overnight.

If a player has made a derogatory comment about opponents speech
issues, it goes without saying that is about as low as it gets,
and a very very lengthy ban and large fine should follow.
Together with some sensitivity training at a minimum.
But of course, any allegation must be proved and everyone is
entitled to the presumption of innocence. So I suppose we will
see.
In dealing with a player who has had a discriminatory comment
made against them, but which the match officials have not heard,
presents a challenge for the referee. I do think by any rational
reading, the acceptable level of dissent must be raised a little
understanding the great upset and stress the person is feeling.
Of course, this doesn’t give free licence to abuse a referee, if
the player violently pushes an official for example, a red card
must follow regardless.
A friend of mine once had to deal with an alleged rascist
comment which he had not heard. The offending party vehemently
denied the remark and the offended party was equally adamant.
The player who suffered the alleged abuse could not understand
why the referee couldn’t send off his opponent based on his
report alone. And he gave fairly serious verbals to the referee
with a number of expletives, not necessarily directed at the
referee but not far off. Eventually his manager calmed him down
and the game resumed. When the match ended 20 minutes later, the
insulted player approached the referee and told him “you’re just
a racist c**t ref.” This was met by an immediate red card, the
player had to be pulled away.
Some were critical of the referee in that case, however, in my
mind, he showed more than enough tolerance and understanding.
So long story short, tough balance to strike and I wouldn’t be
overly critical of Madley.

That's pretty much where I'm at. It is easy being an armchair
referee and saying a penalty was missed, red card missed, etc,
but any referee with any kind of significant experience would
know the protocol was being followed there. I knew even before
Madley went tp speak to the managers that there had been a
discrimination allegation, it was obvious from the reaction of
Ayling and his team mates.

I think (but am not sure) that the ballboy was acting as
instructed. I believe that - when the multiball is being used
the role the ball boys/girls is to retrieve the ball and place
in on the cone thingy. Players taking restarts requiring a ball
take them from the cone thingys not the ball boys/girls. This
should eliminate any question of bias when balls are quickly
handed to the home team but not sofor the visitors.
Happy to be corrected, but if I am right then the individuals
"in the wrong" are the players, not the ball boys/girls.

I think it was also one of those silly times when a player
wanted a "dry" ? ball and yet the previous ball was still near
the field of play and could have been used and the ball boys
have a responsibility to prevent two balls being used at the
same time.

From his little grin at the end of the saga I think you’re being
a bit generous. He’d have released the ball immediately to a
Southampton player if they were chasing a goal.

The protocol as from March 2024
Ball boy (or girl) is strictly prohibited from handing the ball
to an outfield player (there is an exception for gk)
When ball goes out of play they have to place the ball on one of
the cones.
Players have to go to the cone & retrieve a ball from there,
they are not allowed to demand or receive a ball directly from a
ball boy/girl
