I think that’s some revisionism on what happened afterwards -
other than the Ayling incident(s) and the manager’s scuffle,
there’s hardly been a flashpoint (other than the officials
correctly identifying Peretz trying to get Conway sent off).
I’m not defending his overall performance, a clear missed
penalty in the opening minutes and very average since - but i’ll
defend him in terms of control, I don’t think it’s got out of
hand in the slightest (so far). I type this while the subs are
having a bit of a shove 😂
It’s a tense playoff game, there’s rightly a small amount of
needle, even more so with what’s happened before the 1st leg.
Nothing to get too worked up about at the officials for me.

That ballboy should be removed immediately. Would love to have

I dont think ive ever lost count of how many missed penalties a
referee has not given in a game.
Ive lost count with Madley i think thats another one just there
for Southampton. Is that 3 or 4 now?

Absolute garbage from all three teams.
The only consolation is that, should Southampton gain promotion,
they have acquired the necessary attributions to fit in with the
rest of the garbage in the PL.
What has happened to the great game that I have supported,
played in, officiated in and been an administrator for 74 years?
It is never a good watch at the top level these days. Very sad
indeed.

Some of the comments here have been absolutely ridiculous, and I
feel it ties into the previously aired view that once some
people don't like a certain referee they will put the boot in at
any opportunity. Madley made mistakes, there is no dispute
about that, but he certainly didn't lose control of the game.
That phrase is a nonsense, 90%+ of times when it is used the
referee hasn't lost control of anything and rather the players
have lost the plot. He handled the alleged discrimination
perfectly, aside from it wasn't a foul by Ayling and Scienza, as
he did all game, blatantly simulated. There was some dissent by
Ayling following the decision, but the majority of it came after
the alleged comments made towards him. Can you even begin to
imagine the furore that would happen if a referee sent a player
off for complaining about discriminatory comments made towards
him? It could even potentially signal the end of that referee's
professional career. I've been involved in this protocol as
both a referee and observer and it is all quite emotional and
difficult to deal with, no referee at that level is going to be
going to his pocket whether for the player reporting it or when
explaining it to the managers.

Totally agree.
An awful game to watch. An awful performance from the 3rd team.
An awful spectacle with the surrounding controversy.
I do apologise to Luke Ayling after his reaction after the
alleged discriminatory behaviour. If that was largely the
reasoning for his comments towards Madley then he is right to do
so. Madley handled this part very well so kudos to him for that.
Southampton’s actions over the last week or so (if found guilty)
have been an utter disgrace. From spygate to the managers
reaction when Madley was reporting a discriminatory incident to
the ball boy’s antics.
On another note, I think this season has proven we should not be
giving games in the championship to PL officials because some of
them simply cannot cope without their comfort blanket. Some of
them look like a polar bear in the desert. Totally lost.

I know i’ve been in the minority for most of the game - and I
promise i’m not Bobby or any other Madley in disguise! I agree
completely with RustyRef, I’m quite surprised at how quickly
some posters jumped on Madley’s man management. I don’t watch
much Premier League but there wasn’t too much to get egregiously
annoyed about in my view.
A really poor opening decision to not give Boro a penalty but as
for the rest of normal time, just a couple of mistakes not to
book Eckhert and get involved with the ball boy altercation (and
shame on Saints for involving their ballboys and ballgirls if
they were acting upon instruction). But generally tolerable.
As for Extra Time, pretty smooth sailing but Madley cruised
through it and looked the only one on the pitch with anything
left in the tank.
Not one he should look back on with too much glee but also not a
game he should get hung up on.
I didn’t think it was a bad game at all, Saints worthy winners
in my view, pending the investigation (although I don’t think
that should get them thrown out of the playoffs but that’s for
another time).
