Mike Riley - 82% of key match incidents in Premier League
       correct this season

I read various articles regarding VAR over the weekend and these
referenced Mike Riley providing the statistic that without VAR
82% of key match incidents in the Premier League had been called
       correctly this season.
This seems disappointingly low, meaning that almost 1 in 5 are
incorrect - it is certainly somewhat different to the 'referees
get 98% of all decisions correct' (these obviously include every
single decision, of which many are quite easy to give such s
when a defender smashes the ball into Row Z and a throw-in is
       given.)
It's an interesting one in some ways because whereas previously
the objective was probably to use statistics in such a way to
make the decision rate accuracy look as good as possible, there
is probably now also a necessity for them to indicate the more
realistic picture so that they can showcase the incentive for
       VAR coming in.

It is disappointing low & perhaps supports the comments on here
and elsewhere about how much standards seem to have dropped.

You can prove anything with stats and use them for any reason.
If you need to use one to justify rolling out expensive new
technology, then this is probably the time to do it. Otherwise
if it was up at 98%, there's less reason to spend all that cash.
All being said....we are currently dealing with humans and we
would rightly be lauding any player with an 82% goals to shots
       ratio, so let's be realistic.

I don't disagree with that. For me my disappointment comes from
constantly being led to believe it was 98% by the powers that be
but now suddenly it has dropped to 82%, which suggests a drop of
       16%. That's a huge drop. Personally I don't think our referees
are 16% worse than before but this is how he has now made it
       look.

Noticed the remarks by Hackett online...not worth repeating his

Yes, the perspective is that 82% is relatively low due to the
way the information has been presented previously. I do think
it's probably lower than at certain other times but who knows?
We certainly aren't normally given those statistics.

No thanks! I tend to avoid his comments. He seems to get more
bitter by the day. Shame because he could instead do a lot of
       good.

Starting by not criticising officials who he feels aren’t fit
enough. Perhaps he should look at the bulk he carried around
when he was a FIFA official before spewing out illogical drivel.

Depends if they are counting all of the KMI's and not just those
that were 'slightly' controversial and/or highlighted by the TV
       companies?
If not, KMIs that didn't attract attention may have been
'forgotten' to publicly boost the opinion and support towards
the need for VAR or to start at a low level so that following
the first season they will be able to show a significant
       improvement using different criteria?
Stats can prove anything if presented in the right way.
Or is that cynical old me?

Have to fully disagree, I'm afraid. We are talking about Key
Match Incidents (i.e. incidents that affect the outcome of a
game). It cannot be acceptable that 1 in 5 are called
       incorrectly by match officials.
I fully hear, and understand, all of the arguments around
players also making many mistakes, but that isn't the point...
when a player makes a mistake, it costs themselves/their own
team, when an official makes a mistake it costs someone else, so
those decisions have to be above reproach. Particularly when you
look at what is at stake at this level, and indeed how close
things can be. This level of accuracy is nowhere near beyond
reproach - a vast improvement is needed.
