I have no idea whether this is true or not but this actually
makes a lot of sense because I could imagine it being very off
putting for a referee if you could hear the 4O talking to
managers and coaching staff during live play. Then it allows the
4O to be selective in when to communicate.

That would make sense then. So Rock removes the PTT equipped
one and passes it to Taylor and takes Coy's always-open set to
take the centre role.
It also makes sense that the 4th Official would need a PTT
version because, as mentioned in other replies, not everything
said by a 4O during a game would need to be heard by the referee
or two assistants.
Thanks for the answer. An interesting insight from those with
the answers within for us outsiders who are without.

It’s all factual - beady eyes can see on the TV or in-person
Fourth Official’s pressing a button when talking. I saw David
Rock pressing something on his left shoulder at Ipswich vs Derby
this season when he was talking to Leigh, maybe he preferred it
higher up.

Indeed, and it gave some more experienced but non-PL referees a
trip to Wembley, David Allison from Lancaster (1995/6) being a
good example. Terry Heilbron was another and after he refereed
two top-flight plays off finals in consecutive years + a League
Cup Final, the PL referees apparently put their foot down and
the practice ceased, with Championship play off finals refereed
by PL referees thereafter.

I seem to remember that some national list officials got their
promotions after refereeing the championship final, neale barry
being one.

Got to feel for Martin Coy - he looked devestated. It wouldn’t
have been a surprise if he’d had a shot at being FO on the
league 2 final.

Agree - the referee and ARs have an open mic. The 4O doesn't -
can you imagine how distracting all that goes on in the tech
area would be for them!! The 4O can hear them and reply if asked
a question or needs to bring something to the refs attention by
clicking a button somewhere on the system. Normally by their hip
somewhere.
