Yes, I liked that system. They were also very often all EFL
       referees and not premier league.
From memory it often resulted in Terry Heilbron refereeing a big
       final.

Martin Coy and Joe Simpson teaming up for their second Bradford
match in 5 weeks, having both worked the Bradford vs Northampton
       game on Good Friday.

Also, Lewis Smith did have a complete dead rubber at
Hillsborough on Saturday and wasn’t anywhere close to the
spotlight which could also mean playoff final involvement.

Indeed, and it gave some more experienced but non-PL referees a
trip to Wembley, David Allison from Lancaster (1995/6) being a
good example. Terry Heilbron was another and after he refereed
two top-flight plays off finals in consecutive years + a League
Cup Final, the PL referees apparently put their foot down and
the practice ceased, with Championship play off finals refereed
       by PL referees thereafter.

Can any of the actual referees amongst you please explain why it
took/takes so long to replace an injured referee with the 4th
       Official?
There was a lot of messing about with the mics and wires with
Coy taking his off and giving it to Rock, while Rock removed the
mic he was already wearing and put it somewhere else.
If the ref and fourth officials are already wearing the mics and
transmitters, surely it's just a case of stripping the tracksuit
off and checking you've got cards and whistle before going on
the pitch? It's not as if the referee is on a different channel
to the other officials, so the existing gear would still work
without the need to swap? I assume the delay was for Grant
Taylor to get mic'd up as reserve assistant / new 4th official.
But if he didn't already have his own set, why didn't Coy just
hand him his instead of doing a three-way swap?

I believe it's due to the fact that the mic systems used by PGMO
referees have a PTT (Push-to-Talk) microphone for the 4th
official (which is why you see them pressing there lower stomach
sometimes while talking). Obviously itd be rsther impractical
for the centre referee to have to press a button to chat to his
colleagues, so they have to swap them around. It takes a while
but i dont think theres a better way around it
