If the defender had slipped or tripped then the goal would have
stood, but there was contact. Regardless of how major or minor
the contact was, it was still contact, and it caused the
defender to be unable to continue the defence of the goal
attack. Therefore it WAS enough to be a foul and a reason to
disallow the goal. Denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity
by the defending team is an offence, so denying the defence of a
goal scoring opportunity by the attacking team is too.

Not seen the incident in question so cannot comment on the
merits of both the original decsion, the VAR intervention and
       subsequent comments on this forum.
But ...... using reverse logic should work but it does not. As
we have seen with handball, what might be penalised when an
attacker does it, might not be penalised when it is a defender.
Such is the madness we now have in what should be a simple game.

Comparing apples with oranges though. The handball law
specifically states that if an attacker scores immediately after
accidental handling the goal is disallowed, there is no such
clause in law 12 for fouls. The defender was running back to
the ball and was clipped by the attacker, albeit accidentally,
but an accidental foul is still a foul. Without that accidental
trip the defender would have almost certainly prevented the
goal, so the trip was about as impactful as you could possibly
       imagine.
