Tony Harrington is without a doubt the most underrated referee
going, never seems to get the big appointments yet goes about
his job with minimal fuss and usually without controversy

Tony Harrington is criminally underrated by the PGMO. I also
thought the same of Bramall, however this season he has picked
up some big games, so the same may happen for Harrington next
       season, who knows!

Going back a few years I thought Mike Bailey was destined for
the top but it never quite happened for him. David Hutchinson
was the equal of many and more so than some of those who wore a
FIFA badge. In the "safe pair of hands" category, Paul Vanes,
Danny Vickers and David Allison were all very fine referees who,
for some reason, never got the really plum appointments.

When Scott Mathieson retired he held the great honour as being
the only first class surviving [ in a football sense] referee
who had taken charge at Roker Park.
You will no doubt sleep easy in your bed tonight with that
little snippet of useless information. :)

I’m sure our veritable Ipswich reporters would have seen Woolmer
plenty of times at Portman Road.
Some say he was a steady, fair official. Others will argue
       differently.

Underrated: all the prem refs who did it without VAR, without
comms, without a 20 person coaching team, maybe just with buzzer
flags and whilst balancing it all with a full time job.
Ok, nostalgia clouds the memory and of course the game has
changed but did they really get that many more right or wrong?
ARs have improved massively but I think the refs were just about
at the limit of human performance, and unfortunately that wasn’t
good enough for some so we have what we have today.

On his day a good referee but prone to inconsistency. I think he
made SG2 so he certainly wasn't underrated as that would have
been the pinnacle for his ability I suggest.
I met him once; a pleasant down to earth sort of chap.

In response to poster above Hooper and Dowd are complete polar
opposites. Dowd was a maverick who wasn’t afraid to make big
decisions even if it was sometimes wrong. Hooper rarely gives a
red card never mind a penalty.
From days gone by- overrated: Riley, Poll, Durkin.
Underrated: Bennett, and I always liked Steve Dunn and Eddie
       Wolstenholme

       Underrated:
I really like Thomas Bramall - as a fan of Portsmouth in the
championship we rarely get him live, but whenever I have watched
him on TV he has always impressed me, and feel he should get
some 'better' premier league appointments instead of the same
       faces each time.
       Overrated:
Personally, i'm not a massive fan of Stephen Martin, when we
have had him this season he was inconsistent with his cards
which was frustrating - for example, in the Norwich away game
(3/4/26) we should have had two red cards for second yellows
missed. However, he was penalising those fouls and giving
yellows elsewhere in the game. i'm of the view that if its a
yellow card, its a yellow card, regardless of timing in the
game, or being on a yellow already.
I'm not a referee, just a football fan, but for what it's worth
that's my opinion. Have a good week everyone :)
