M OLIVER - Fulham v Villa

Usual high standard Oliver performance in the first half.
It’s been a turgid watch and he’s only had to deal with minor
fouls and offsides, with Burt being kept fairly busy.
Good to see some yellow at the Cottage for once!!

pau torres booked for a pullback close to the edge of the villa
penalty area within 2 minutes of the re-start, then not booked
for the same offence in a more central position a few minutes
later - bar for 2nd has been set high today [emoji15]

Oliver fell below his usual exceptional standard today in my
opinion. I truly believe he is the best ref in Europe, and every
time I see him live in Fulham games he backs that up. Today
though, virtually every bit of contact was a foul, the type of
contact that has been left alone by refs in the majority of Prem
games this season. Far too many soft free kicks given both ways.
The Fulham disallowed goal is a very dubious call. I’d hazard a
guess that goal is allowed in 95% of matches, as contact in and
around the keeper has a much higher tolerance level these days
it seems.
Nothing terrible, and I’m glad I can have a little whinge when
we’ve won (never looks great after a defeat), but for me, that
wasn’t vintage Oliver today.

Our last four games with Oliver in the middle is W4 D0 L0. Happy
days!
As Craven said above, a little less lenient with some fouls that
we usually see when Oliver is in the middle, and Pau Torres
could have walked with his second deliberate pullback, so a
little inconsistent with that.
VAR wasn’t going to get involved and come in with the disallowed
goal, but Berge should have left well alone and not give the
decision to make in the first place.
That said, his performance didn’t affect the result in any way,
and always good to see a high quality elite official at Fulham
plying his trade.

quite agree - to me it seemed martinez was holding on to berge
as much as vice versa [emoji54]

After now seeing the disallowed goal numerous times on TV, I
retract my earlier comments that it was highly dubious, and
admit Oliver got that spot on. Berge does have a grip of
Martinez’ shirt and affects him jumping for the ball.
Still think very similar goals have been awarded this season,
but two wrongs certainly don’t make a right, and Oliver was
correct on this occasion.
Purely hypothetical, but would’ve been interesting to see
whether VAR would’ve got involved had the goal been given. My
gut instinct is probably not.
