A Woolmer - Sunderland v Portsmouth

Well well
Ill start by saying upto the 70th minute the referee in my view
was excellent.
However he then sends off a Sunderland player for DOGSO, for
what in my view is not a clear goalscoring opportunity, with the
attacker going wide of the goal.
Maybe others will disagree or not, In sure our mackem collegaues
on here will have something to say

I really don't know how he has got to DOGSO there. Before being
fouled the attacker's touch has sent the ball off towards the
corner flag and it certainly wasn't anywhere near obvious
enough.

I agree. I thought he was brilliant for the first 70 minutes and
really contributed to a tense and exciting game. However, the
red card for the DOGSO was an awful decision. The worst thing
for me was how quick he dished out the red card. Clearly gave
himself no time to think. From that moment on, I felt like every
decision that was 50:50 was given the way of Sunderland
On a separate note, his movement looked very uncomfortable
throughout (even though he seemed to keep up with play well),
and often ended up in rather bizarre positions. I just watched
feeling that now is probably the right moment for him to hand up
his whistle before his movement does worsen

I could not agree more Mackem Ref.
His first seventy minutes he was so anonymous and that led to
the game flowing quite well and the obvious lack of quality was
no fault at all of the referee then...……..
OH DEAR OH DEAR OH DEAR !!!!!!!
No wonder our friends from Doncaster had the hump with on Good
Friday.

So much is riding on the result of play offs for the Clubs
involved, the selection of officials should be determined by
ability and current form alone. Rewards for long and/or loyal
service or giving them a good send off before retirement must
play no part.
Quite simply, whoever is responsible for the appointments, had
he or she followed the advice on RTR, would have known that
Woolmer was not up to this and have gone for a much safer pair
of hands. The same would also probably have gone for Pawson.

Peter Bankes did the league game there and missed a tackle on a
Sunderland player so horrific it the player [George Honeyman the
Sunderland captain] was out for six weeks.
We were certainly not happy with his performance on December
22nd, but hey ho...………...

I agree with these views. On movement and positioning, I've
always thought Andy to be a bit of an old-style maverick -
chasing into the penalty area (rather than a wider angle away
from the goal action) and then getting caught up in play -
chasing back to the centre after a goal rather than looking to
see what is going on - so it doesn't surprise me when you say
that he often ended up in rather bizarre positions. Speedy
Gonzales was how I once described him but he seems to have lost
the speed since I last saw him and so I agree, it is probably
the right time for him to hang up his whistle in the same way as
another 'old-timer', Roger East.

As a fan only I am always into the ground by an hour before
kick-off and whoever the three officials are at whatever level
you see them jogging side to side to loosen themselves and then
doing little more than gentle exercise whilst the teams warm up.
What I saw on Saturday night was indeed bizarre as Mr Woolmer
ran diagonally from a point half way inside one half to the
opposite point in the other half on several occasions at full
speed with arms pumping like pistons .My thoughts were if he was
having to get up to speed forty minutes before kick-off then we
may have a problem.
