hi,
from ifab protocol...
'...a referee should not check the VAR solely because a player
asks. According to the IFAB VAR protocol, VAR automatically
checks all major incidents. Players are prohibited from
attempting to influence or interfere with the review process,
and excessively demanding a review or making the "TV signal" can
result in a yellow card'.

Martin Samuel, with whom I often don't agree, puts it very well
in today's Times when he commends Tierney and Brooks for their
actions. Sometimes the letter of the law has to catch up with
its intrinsic purpose. Samuel makes the good point that failure
to police and adequately punish foul play leads to a cumulative
worsening situation as with the ludicrous grappling and
wrestling which is now tolerated in the goal mouth area. My
view; ruffling of hair is not violent, pulling hair is.

Again, this is not what happened in the incident yesterday.

hi,
thanks for the link - an interesting read [emoji106]...
...although that refers to when NOT challenging for the ball -
and martinez and calvert-lewin were - it's been made clear
earlier in the season that hair pulling is classed as VC and
will result in a RC. Also, hair pulling is a deliberate action
and can't be classed as accidental. Michael Carrick shouldn't be
trying to defend this, even if he does think it's 'soft'. In his
post match interview Carrick said that Martinez 'tried to grab
his shirt but ended up touching his head' [emoji38]
btw: this isn't a dig at Man U - it wouldn't matter which team
the offender played for.

So if they were challenging for the ball, it cannot be Violent
Conduct. VC can only occur when not challenging for the ball.
Pushing someone is not a normal footballing action and is not
accidental; do you send someone off everytime they push someone?

Just a thought,if the referee is called to the monitor does he
only have 2 options?
Either a Red Card or ignore it altogether,VAR cannot get
involved with YC’s

The referee can downgrade to a caution, but not on the say-so of
VAR.

The VAR can only call the referee to the screen if they believe
it to be a red card offence. Once the referee is at the screen,
they can choose any option they wish so a YC can be awarded
after a review.
This was the case in the Brooks/Cucurella incident where VAR
Graham Scott called Rob Jones for an OFR for Violent Conduct but
the final decision was a YC for Brooks.
Also, in the case of SFP, this season, VAR James Bell called
Chris Kavanagh to the screen as there was a challenge by a
Wolves player that Bell thought was SFP but Kavanagh only deemed
it to be reckless and gave a YC after review.

If the referee considers or notices he has missed a YC he can
give one, it has happened a few times. VAR can't call him to the
monitor if they only think it's a YC or should be a YC not a RC
but the referee can make the call having reviewed the footage.
