Hair pulling is treated as an act of vc regardless of the force
involved. It is a deliberate act and has the potential to cause
serious injury. Understandably, referees don't have to judge the
degree of violence involved or make a decision based on the
outcome. I doubt many players will now try a hair pull again. By
even thinking of giving a yellow, players will take a chance
with the possibility of serious injury. This zero tolerance
approach should eliminate this offence.
It is worth remembering what Howard Webb said on his programme
Match Officials Mic'd Up. Hair pulling has the potential for
serious injury and will be sanctioned with a red. Carrick
clearly didn't watch it.

has spoilt the game really but that is entirely due to the
foolishness of 1 player in a team underperforming.

To be fair, Tete got away with pulling Semenyos hair earlier
this season…..

Was just about to say this. Brooks also didn’t get sent off at
Chelsea as well so where is the consistency
[/quote]
There was no conclusive footage that Brooks pulled Cucurella's
hair and that's not what the VAR was reviewing for. He put his
arm across his shoulder and chest and dragged him back so it was
very unlikely from that position that he could also have grabbed
his hair. Having been dragged back, Cucurella's hair goes
flying and might look from some angles like it has been pulled.
More generally the idea that all hair pulling is a red card and
three match ban is a ridiculous overcompensation from PGMOL from
when Mike Dean didn't send Taylor to the monitor for a hair
pulling offence.
Context is key. Pulling someone's hair when standing waiting for
a corner to come in is clearly an act of violent conduct.
Pulling someone's hair unintentionally as part of normal
challenging/grappling for the ball is a foul, but is hardly
violent conduct and has no justification in law.

I would agree with this had Tete been sent off for pulling
Semenyos hair. That really could not have been much more
obvious.

hi,
herein lies the problem - either Carrick isn't aware of the
rules or chooses to ignore them, this then filters down to the
players. Carrick's post match comments are frankly ridiculous
and display extraordinary levels of 'whataboutery' regarding
perceived fouls in the build up to both Leeds' goals (which
incidently weren't appealed for in real time by the Man U
players on the pitch).
In most walks of life, a manager is responsible for an
employees' actions whilst they are in the course of their
employment - legally known as 'vicarious liability'. Carrick
needs to familiarise himself with the rules and casade those
down to his subordinates before he starts blaming Team Ref for
his teams' failings.
Leeds were far and away the better team, and similarily to
Bournemouth last weekend, showed the 'bigger' team how to play
the game correctly.
regards,
gnr

As I’ve said earlier, if this guidance is so strict/clear; why
was Tete not sent off?
This is why managers and fans become frustrated. The threshold
and/or guidance seems to change, purely depending on what PGMOL
fancy. Either pulling someone’s hair is a mandatory RC, or it is
like other potential SFP; and it judged on speed, intensity and
so on

I can not understand why anyone would think that because one
referee makes a mistake and doesn’t apply the laws every referee
should be tied by this precedent and not by the laws of the
game. If you do enough research it would be possible to find so
many incorrect precedents that we could throw the laws away.
If you want to know if pulling hair is violent conduct try it
next time you are in a pub.
Changing tack to settle a pub argument, do our female referees
have to pass the same fitness test as their male counterparts?
After last Saturday and the match before it will surprise people
if they do….advice from our learned members please.

Totally agree. To those questioning why Tete wasn’t sent off in
the Man City v Fulham, the simple answer is the fact that the
VAR made an error. It is one that they shouldn’t be making but
it was a mistake.
Referring back to last night, it is the correct decision and I
dislike how much Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes were
bashing the officials last night for a correct application of
Law. Man United were awful last night and the sending off
probably made them play that little bit better.

There is a large difference between make a mistaking and
completing ignoring something. If we look at the Tete hair pull
on Semenyo; where is the mistake? VAR looked at it, and if they
some how didn't see the hair pull, we have some serious issues.
For your pub analogy....... if I went into a pub and carelessly
tripped someone, I don't think it would end well. Does that mean
careless trips should become a red card?
Also..... hair pulling is not specified in the laws as a red
card. And from reading PGMOs own guidance, hair pulling is not
an automatic red as some are saying

Agree but by this logic Michael Keane was sent off against
wolves when accidentally pulling the opponents hair despite
challenging for the ball. And why was tete not sent off. Can’t
say it’s always a red when similar instances haven’t been
punished the same way
