I know Sky said Cordoba received a yellow card in that situation
but I think that was given to Azon because I very clearly saw
him waving the imaginary yellow card.

No it was definitely Cordoba. Does that me yet another missed
yellow and error to add to the long list!

Not easy for me as an ITFC supporter to try and provide a fair
report on Anthony’s performance but I’ll do my best to be
honest.
I’m still not convinced by the penalty award and I don’t think
Hodskinson should be getting involved as he’s probably too far
away from the incident and I think there was someone in his line
of vision to the incident too. The contact on Taylor is minimal
and I’m of the belief he’s falling before any possible contact.
After this incident, to me it felt like he tried to control the
match too much by not letting much go and by cautioning some
players for challenges I didn’t feel reached the threshold for a
caution. I’d agree a couple of them he had to give but there
were also a few I felt were quite harsh but in my opinion
Backhouse done well in the first half.
In the second half, he started to lose some control but not
through his own fault - that was through the introduction of
Marcelino Nunez. A large proportion of the Norwich fan base were
more interested in giving him a hard time than watching the game
at that point and some Norwich players were doing their best to
wound him up. Darling in particular who started a confrontation
after a challenge by Nunez that resulted in a yellow card
apiece.
There was another moment in the second half when McClean was
booked for a late challenge and then proceeded to literally
almost square up to Backhouse and had his say. To me that’s
clear dissent so I’d like referees to be stronger and administer
2 cautions in scenarios like that. 1 for the challenge and 1 for
dissent. But that’s a conversation for another day.
Norwich had a decent shout for a penalty when McClean went down
under Johnson’s challenge from a corner and the ball also struck
Johnson’s arm which in my opinion could easily have been
penalised.
Leif Davis - not sure how he stayed on the pitch. Went down to
ground, grabbed the ball deliberately and also kicked the ball
away and no caution which would’ve been his second.
Nunez… his first challenge after his first caution I didn’t
think was enough for a second yellow. How on earth he wasn’t
given his marching orders for the challenge on Cordoba… only
Anthony will know. I think Kieran McKenna substituting him
immediately after tells the whole story.
Anthony was generally fine and I don’t think he hardly missed a
foul but his reluctance to give second cautions to players will
be a very big talking point about his performance, plus the
penalty incident too but that’s more to do with Hodskinson.
Honestly, I think I’ve seen worse performances but today wasn’t
great and Ipswich were the beneficiaries of some questionable
decision making today.

I think that is a very fair synopsis and well written. The only
bit I disagree slightly with is the conclusion. If you fail to
send off two and award an incorrect penalty, I don’t think a
performance can be defined as generally fine. I think that was a
pretty horrible match to referee, all stemming from the penalty
award, and subsequent behaviour of both teams and yellow card
flashing. A fairly potent mix!! Think he should be given a
couple of much less high profile matches in the Championship to
end what others more learned than me, have said has been a good
season for him.

Agreed, Beacon. I thought he refereed parts of the game well but
seemed to lack the clarity of mind to make the big decisions in
the second half.
I’m quite surprised that the Davis incident is going under the
radar, I thought that was a far clearer second bookable offence
than Nunez, but I guess the theatre of Nunez’s cameo will
continue to take the headlines.

I'm not sure anyone can have a generally fine game when they
give a "soft" penalty they haven't seen and failed to send off 2
players.
I believe his performance was on a par with Simon Hooper's 1st
premier league game all those years ago, which got him a 2 year
break from refereeing another premier league game.
For clarity the EFL/PGMOL should at least release a transcript
of how the penalty decision was made. There is a very good
screenshot ( sorry I'm not tech enough ) taken after the alleged
foul with both ref and AR following the ball and play out of the
area towards the half way line. If it was the AR's decision why
didn't he flag?

For clarity, when I said Anthony was generally fine I was
referring to his general foul detection. I’ve seen performances
where what is penalised is totally random and inconsistent but
the performance never fell under that category. Like I said, his
problem was his reluctance to award second cautions when there
should have been and lost that grip on the match that he did
have. Of course when you factor in every incident in the match,
the performance feels less than satisfactory because these KMI’s
go a long way in deciding each match.
With regards to your comment on why didn’t the AR flag for the
penalty incident, I do agree with that. I don’t understand why
he didn’t flag and make it clear on his thoughts on the
incident, then it would’ve been much clearer for the supporters
to understand what was happening.

I agree that even with radio communication the AR has to
own/sell that decision; otherwise it looks way to much as an
afterthought. Its s careless challenge, rarely given, but IMO,
is a penalty.
The first foul shown on highlights by cautioned player was NOT
worthy if a YC. It was a careless trip, bog standard foul.
However, whatever way you look at his next foul, careless or
reckless, it just has to be a 2YC. Failure to award this undoes
any previous work. (Especially when you look at other games
where 2YCs were punished correctly)

I see/hear Keith Hackett ( on X Football Insider ) says it
wasn't a penalty !!! I'm not sure that helps based on his recent
comments.

From watching the highlights, I think the Ipswich player has
dived for the penalty - I can't see any contact from any of the
angles shown. The referee's view is blocked by the body of the
Ipswich player, so if the AR is telling him over comms that it's
an absolute nailed on penalty then I don't think he has much
choice but to go with it, but this is the problem with using
comms - there is a lack of transparency about what is happening.

I assume you mean the first foul after he's cautioned, for the
trip on the touchline? Totally agree it's not a caution.

The next one is reckless for me - studs appear to be making
contact on the ankle. Not sure how it "has" to be a 2YC if you
only deem it careless though!
